I tried an MP3 because I got it cheap and I needed a detector for my nephew to play with on the beach. It wasn't all that deep and was cheaply made. It was also very hard to pinpoint with, but for what I paid for it, it served it's purpose. The positives were: it's light, it works, and the discrimination is very good.

If you're buying new you won't get half of what you paid for it when it's time to resell. One day the Chinese might make a decent detector for the money but that day has not yet come.

I just got an MPX, and although I have little to compare it to other than seriously antiquated equipment, I've got to say that it performs much like I anticipated it would.

I've only had a chance to try it twice because of the weather (rain & high wind).
First around the house, which turned up nothing but .45auto brass about 8" down, some sort of old aluminum jar lid, and an old zinc mason jar lid. Not too suprising out here in the middle of nowhere on a 30yr old homestead. Garbage left by the cross-eyed white trash that built the place is going to be the norm around here.

Anyway, today I went and checked out a tot lot. It is relatively newly constructed, and doesn't get a lot of use. The town doesn't even have a regular traffic signal, just a four-way flasher, so traffic in the park is minimal. The "play areas" are deep in wet wood chips, but I still found two quarters, four dimes, one nickel, thirteen pennies, and a child's ring. Since the temp is only 42°, and the wind chill is 36°, I only spent about 2hrs swinging, and I didn't even cover a tenth of the park, so there is still a lot of discovery yet to do.

Pinpointing with it is easy and accurate. A regular handheld pinpointer is still an asset, but the MPX will put you on target to begin with quite well.

The discrimination works well. I notched out nails and bottlecaps (iron), set the sensitivity two bars below max, and after that it never lied to me. If it said that there was someting down there, there was. Some (like the nickel & child's ring) were down about 8-9".

The ID isn't too bad either. It has seven ID audio tones as well as the front pannel LCD icons. Pennies show up as gold rings, dimes as dimes, nickels as nickels, and quarters as quarters (clad only...I didn't find any silver).

I got mine re-furbed with the standard deep 10" coil and an 8" for just over $100 shipped tmd, and for the money I have no complaints. If I was buying one new, an F2 runs about the same money as a new MPX, and would probably be a better choice. The MPX notches progressivly, where the F2 allows more selective notching, and the F2 digital signal readout would be nice too. But all in all, the MPX seems like a fairly nice entry level machine.
