I know most of the experienced people say a minimum of 100-150 hours to learn the language of a machine.
I read one post from a guy who said forget that...3 seasons of hunting is more like it to get real fluent. I am leaning toward his point of view, especially with a audio only unit like most of the Tesoro's. Getting better with every hunt, and I try to learn something new every time I go out. Luckily, it is fun learning the language once you get past that initial, real beginner," What the heck am I doing", stage. Sometimes, after digging hundreds if not thousands of targets, you get to a point where you just Know you have got a good signal to dig. Sunday, I dug these two objects out of the same small 3" wide hole. They were just about as close to each other as they are in the picture, too. The signal wasn't a perfect dime signal, and I was using some disc, but my Vaq still gave me a good enough tone that I knew this was propably going to be a keeper. That iron sure surprised me though. I dug that out of the hole first...I think it might even have been laying 1-2 inches above the dime. Even though I am "itching" to get another higher end detector, I will never get rid of this one because I just love my Vaq! The more I learn the language, the better it seems to get! ![]() HH __________________ |

I've told myself that I wanted one detector to begin with and run with it for the first year in this hobby. I too am learning the language of my little Compadre.
Seems coins have a more pronounced pop than other signals. Now if only I can differentiate a cap/coin signal I'll feel I'm finally "there".

I was getting "there" when using my Vaq and the regular coil. Most pop tops, (except for the real rusty ones), break up some when you "wiggle" or "whip" the coil over these things quickly. Then I changed to the 10x12 DD. They don't break up so much, anymore! Not at all, actually. Plus, I am a dig it all kind of guy anyway and I always dig all solid high tone coin signals, of course. Digging a lot more pop tops these days. I guess you have to learn the language and all the related dialects to get real good at this stuff! Good thing it's still fun while you learn in this hobby. __________________ |

Seems to me that you are becoming "one" with the Vaq and your story shows that the Vaq is capable of separating targets quite well.
