Default Detector for 9 year old?

Hi there

20 years ago I was given a metal detector for a christmas present by my grandmother - I enjoyed every minute of using it and I'm thinking for this Christmas a metal detector would make my 9 year old son a very happy man!

Problem is, I've not touched one for 15 years and I'm kind of out of the picture - I'm in Germany so I need to purchase from Germany, maybe amazon - I would appreciate any recommendations on wich model would be ideal for my son..

I dont want to give him a toy detector but more an adult version to make him feel more important knowing he has a quality detector in his hands..

Any advice will be greatfull..

Martin

P.S price limit is around €120

Garrett ACE 150 if your trying to save a few $$$, or an ACE 250 which will include Pinpoint mode which is very valuable to have including a few extra discrimination programs.

There is nothing else to even consider as far as I'm concerned! My son was 8 when I bought him his Ace 150 and now he's 10 and want's to use my Ace 250.

^^ Thank you for the lighting reply, Ace 150 is a little out of price range, here in Germany it's around €180 - he's worth every penny but I dont want to spend too much just incase he does not take an interest to the hobby later on..

I was going to suggest the ACE 150 also.

are you able to buy online?

there are some quality web companies that sponsor this website.

check the classifieds on this site also.

Good Luck!@

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV would be a good choice... Well built, easy to use, and has good discrimination and tone ID features.

You won't be disappointed! The only difference between the Ace150 & the Ace250 is the pinpoint feature and one custom discrimination program mode. Both will detect equally as deep and as well.

I use my Ace250 for everything except saltwater detecting. It's light, very accurate and easy to use.

I hope your 9 year old enjoys the hobby. Don't forget to take your little one to places that they can find results quickly and preferable less trashy places. I take mine to TOT lots and places where he can dig up modern coins and such like parks etc. It may not be worth much to you and I, but to a kid, finding coins is lot's of fun!

At the current exchange rate for the Euro ($165)- used are the Ace 250, Fisher F2, Tesoro Compadre/Silver U-max. If you go new I would definitely give the Tesoro Compadre serious consideration due to the lifetime warranty.

My vote would go to the Compadre as well but your son should have fun with the Ace 150.

The Ace was a good choice. I let my 9-year old use my Ace 250 when we go together. She really likes it, but she can only swing for about 40 minutes before she gets tired .

I hope not! we have a park near by that's full of sand, will be a good starting point for him.. but at the moment we have 30cm of snow so for now the coins hidden under the carpet will have to do

Yep, I think so too - still wait for delivery so fingers crossed it's here this week so I can test it and wrap it up!

My main hobby is photography, landscapes etc My web www.martins-photography.com one of the main reason I decided on a metal detector is so he can join me while I'm taking photos - this way hes not bored and we get to spend time together out in the field.

Just need to read up now on the German rules and regs for metal detecting..

Default Ask Locally

Go to the city hall where you're going to search in germany. Ask there for the "Ordnungsamt" - "(municipal) public affairs office". They can tell you what's allowed and what is verboten.

But one thing is for all: it's a must have to have permission from the lands owner.
