Im at school away from home and dont have any of my redbooks.
found and 1865 indian head cent. it is green from being in the ground but it is in great shape. "liberty" on the indians band is clearly legible along with details in the feathers. on the reverse the shield has all the vertical and horizontal lines clear. think it is almost ms 60, probably around 55 or 58 no wear but just tarnished from being in the ground. any idea of a value? |

It definitely won't grade since you said that it tarnished (and I'm guessing that it's partially corroded too). The fact that it was dug doesn't help it's value either. You really need to post a picture so we can give you an accurate grading and value assessment. Assuming you graded it correctly in AU55, it's worth around $20-$25 at most, if you can find a buyer. Most people won't buy damaged coins.

Depends how damaged. If the price is right I will buy a coin with some corrosion as I am a collector and not an investor. Yes, their is a differance between the two. And their is ways of non-evasivly getting rid of the verdigri. It will not however grade as an MS coin. a coin out of the ground cannot be mint state as all the luster is gone. It may rate as high as EF which could make it a $45 coin. hope this helps. WOLF

yea the only thing bad about it is the color. i wouldnt even say it was corroded it is still smooth just a green tint to it. if it was corroded it wouldnt have the detail still. it looks like it was minted then dropped on the ground.

its not gonna let me take a pic close enough without being blurry. did a little looking at some other graded coins. as far as detail it is ms 60 but there arent any green one to compare. im sure this drops the grade but how much? there are no corrosion "bubbles" or bumps but it is all tarnished but still shows full detail.

thanks for your advice. its not too hard for me to grade coins out of circulation but i didnt know how much being in the ground and what comes with that affects grade.

If it were to be graded, it would come back MS details, if it indeed is MS. No reputable TPG gives net grades anymore. If you look at the older white ANACS slabs they sometimes have net grades.
