If it is going to become a full time dry land machine, then the Excal is the one to get from the two you listed.

I personally think the Excal is not the best machine for dry land. Weights too much and it is not well balanced. Of course, you can throw some money at it and hip mount it and or get a different shaft set up.

Default both uses

Yeah Im thinking of going with the excal sitll. I travel alot by foot and it make sense to have a water proof machine. Since i often get caught in rain storms. The exal II does alright on dry ground rite?

Yes it does.

For something less expensive, deep and easier to pack on trips, you might want to look at the Detector Pro Wader.

YES!! Very good suggestion for a wet sand/water unit!

Tesoro Tigershark Hands Down.

Has Salt/Fresh switch and.........has lifetime Warranty. Yeah I'll stick with a Lifetime warranty on any Water Machine, just take care of it and Tesoro will take care of you.

Plus you save a ton of $$.

The Tiger shark is a good machine but I think the Wader is a little more stable than it is in the saltwater... the Tiger shark is tops on small gold and freshwater...

But either of these machines are lighter and cheaper than the Excal and are both good choices..

The Excal 11 is no lighter than the older models... and unless you are willing to change to a straight shaft its not a good choice as a land machine... its original purpose was for divers... its fine underwater but its heavy above...

If your talking about wet sand hunting and not water hunting the Minelab Sovereign GT would be perfect. It's as deep as the Excalibur with the benifit of being able to change coils to fit the conditions. It's also excellent for land hunting and you can choose to use a meter if you hit the parks. It's my do it all detector.

Default Detector Choice

No way do you want to use a PI unit on dry land. You will go nuts in a few minutes. Way to hot of a detector to use with no discrimination. The Wader does a fine job at the beach. I would recommend the 10 inch coil to get a few inches deeper. Pinpointing might be a tad harder, but you will catch on. It seems that Detectorpro does not pull it's older units when a new version comes out. Make sure you get one with the ability to switch coils. That is the current version. I picked up a brand new 8 inch that you could not switch the coil on for 375.00. Almost a 200.00 savings.

I also have an Excalibur II. A wonderful unit. I just think it loses what makes it special when it leaves the beach. I know there is a local guy around here that does all his hunting with one. He finds good stuff deep. A fragile unit in the branches. Just my opinion. Heavy also.
