Had a Cobra Beach Magnet and HATED IT!!! Replaced it with a used Detector Pro Diver and have been happy ever since. It is within your price range and you can hunt ANYWHERE with it. It is simple and light weight and runs on 9V batteries. I have the model with a mechanical connection on the coil to headphones. With this model, you can change coil size. Hard to beat them for the money.

It's a Chinese made rip off of a Fisher's 1280-X.

I was told, jokingly, by detecting friends that they couldn't find a Volkswagen in the sand. Don't know about that, but I sure couldn't find coins or rings. Also it was heavy and had poor balance. Never have regretted the decision to send it back, even though I didn't get all the money back.
