I've read some posts on this site here and there over the last few years,
but just now signed up. I'm not really a 'metal detectorist' (yet, anyways) but I have a lot of fun with my rig. I used to have a Garrett 'Treasure Ace 150' (?) but it was stolen from my shed by a crackhead. The crackhead was arrested, but the machine was never recovered ![]() Anyways, my parents recently purchased me a really generic metal detector, it looks like hot sh!t but it's definitely bottom of the line (compared to my garrett, anywho)..... 1 year ago we moved into a home that was built in 1900. HUGE backyard, with the foundation of an old garage or something that has long since been reclaimed by nature. I hadn't had a lot of opportunity to pick over the yard with my old machine, as it was stolen shortly after we moved in. My premier finds were about 30 zincolns and a 1941 Mercury dime. My brother (R.I.P) found a 1958 canadian penny and about 6 inches of gold chain(that tested out at 14 k, he sold it for 40 bucks, the bast@rd!)......and then nothing for a year. And then nothing for a year. This afternoon, i remembered I had the new machine, so I went and picked up some batteries for it, and decided to give it a whirl. So I started picking around the old foundation. Within minutes, I got my first signal, and dug up an old tube of 'gasket sealer'. Two minutes later, I got a similar signal, and dug up a 1950 D wheat cent. I ran in the house, gabbed my girlfriends ear off about it for like 10 minutes, and threw it in my ultrasonic cleaner. I went back out, and tried my luck in the same area.got a really strong signal, so I started digging. TONS of broken old bottles. LOADS of them. Apparently the old house dumpsite. I didn't come up w/any metal, but I did find a really nice antique marble (the kind with the little spurs on each side of it) and some partial bottles with some lettering/designs.... I came in because it was getting dark and I got stung by a sweat bee. Anyways, yeah, I'm new here. I had my first m.d trip of 2010, and it was a success (by my standards, anyways)........the 1950 d would grade as an au/unc, if it hadn't spent the last 60 years in the dirt. after the ultrasonic, you can actually see some of the original brilliant red on the reverse. might need to send it through the machine another time or two. Looking forward to what tomorrow holds.... Regards, Myke List |
