Thanks for the link! It seems like I have seen that before. I can't say exactly where though.

Good link. I will be adding to Metal Detecting "Favorites" folder for future reference for when I travel.

What happened to Alaska and WV?

Sometimes even though you can metal detect a park, there seems to be rules against what you can dig or not that doesn't make it worth the effort. National Forests, at least here in VA, have this diclosure, "Metal detecting is generally allowed, however, the collection of any archeological or historical object is illegal. Digging, disturbing, or otherwise altering the ground is prohibited." In other words, if you lost a ring under a picnic table you can metal detect to find it, but otherwise, they don't really allow it. I have seen similiar restrictions on some of the state parks and other sites as well. Nothing historical can be excavated, and historical is sometimes defined pretty loosely.

Yes, but coins are specifically exempted from the historical item definition.

The ARPA only covers items that are at least 100 years old and MUST BE of historical or archaeological SIGNIFICANCE. Coins, bottles and other items are not protected.

In all National Forest, metal detecting is allowed. There are 4 types of detecting, 2 require permits (historical or archaeological digs and "Treasure Trove" digs) Don't let the Rangers BS you!

When it says digging or disturbing the ground it means perment damage not digging a little hole and refilling it. Use the term slice, pop or probe when talking to the rangers and be sure you refill your hole.

Let common sense rule!

Default contorted rules

theres actually some "parks" that specify that you must carry a small shovel in order to properly dispose of (ie bury) your own excrement you know back country hygene and what not, no closer than 100 meters to a body of water etc.
