When I was a kid my Mother would tell me to rub mud on my bee sting. Unless you are allergic to bee's, I don't think you have to put anything on the sting, after an hour goes by you never knew you were bit. I normally get bit about twice a year. Steve.

Carol, GREAT tip, thanks! I ususally get stung once or twice a year.

Just a caution for everyone, though. Keep ammonia and bleach away from each other. If they get mixed it'll make lethal mustard gas. Curt

My mom used to use a paste made with baking soda and vinegar that worked pretty well for taking the sting away.

I dont get to many bee stings but I get wasp stings ALOT at work. the wasp like to make nest inside the caps of cylinders where I work and I have to take those caps off to do my job...in the summer 9 out of 10 caps will have a nest in it,most of the guys spray the caps with wasp spray before before they take the caps off but wasp spray makes me sick so I just have to be careful..needless to say I get stung often. I use that after bite stuff and it works well but having to buy it all the time gets expensive...guess Ill have to get me a bottle of ammonia and keep it at work.

Well i smoke and ive been tought that if you are a smoker or are with somewone who smokes and get stung by a bee you take a ciggerette and put the tabacco in your mouth make it wet and put it on the sting and it draws out the "venom" and the stinger. Tried it one time and it worked great. I just carry bandaids now. But the ammonia is a great tip as well. Thanks for the info.

Ive had good results with oragel (used for tooth aches). Wish I knew about it when I was a kid. Its funny to think of all the crap "remedys" people would tell you to try that didnt work at all. But the oragel works instantly.

Yeah, this old trick worked for me as a kid too. OF course it was chewing tobacco, but same concept.

I will have to get a small bottle of ammonia. My boy got stung under the eye this past summer and it swelled pretty good. He had a shiner for almost a week. Of course, being an 8 year old boy, I'm sure he will get into more wasps / bees next year.

I'm an unusual case. I can't shrug it off like others who only get little red bumps, but I'm not epipen bad. What I get is severe isolated reactions, where there is a large amount of swelling that can last for a couple of days. Thanks for the ammonia tip! HH

Meat tenderizer is the best I've found for stinging insects. Mix a pinch with a few drops of water and apply to the sting site. The sooner the better.

Meat tenderizer beaks down protein and stinging insect venom contains protein.

"Melittin, a protein having a molecular weight of 33,000 to 35,000, is thought to be responsible for the general local toxicity of the venom. Melittin in high concentrations also has caused hemolysis of red blood cells."

http://maarec.cas.psu.edu/bkCD/HBBio...sect_sting.htm

Fresh pineapple(bromelain) or papaya(papain) would also probably work.

My dad showed me a remedy when I was a kid that worked. Take three leaves from each of a different tree or shrub, chew them together, and apply as a poultice to a sting. Doesn't matter what kind of trees, as long as their three different ones. I used it successfully several times out in the woods. Works on packsaddle stings too.
