Hello all,
I am swinging an Ace 250 and I have both the stock and 9x12 coil. I recently found a nice cache of 3-$5 gold pieces with the 9x12 coil, but had a difficult time locating the spot accurately. I would appreciate some feedback from people who have experience with the large 9x12 coil. What is the deepest depth you have found items id'd on the display? What diameter plugs are you digging? Do you like the 9x12 coil overall? I am MD'ing a school house from 1897 currently and am finding nothing good thus far in spite of the owner assuring me that no one has MD'd there before. I put on the large coil and am hitting water pipes and other odd things. What am I missing?

Sounds like you're not missing much at all. I couldn't use my 9x12 much, due to the fact that the hits I had pegged out my depth meter at +8 inches, and I wasn't comfortable where I was at digging deep holes. I liked using it though, and the coverage is great, but I'll save it to use in an area where a big hole can be dug if necessary.
The 9x12 may be overkill in certain situations and areas. Maybe working with the sensitivity setting will help out the water pipe issue unless you just want to notch it out and go on.

Hello !
I am very interested in this 9 x 12 " coil question. That's specially because I am planning to search for militaria relics on open fields next time in my homeland. As I have already read it was designed for covering large open areas. I know too, most of the relics lay within the first 6 " depth range, specially in our America's . But the sense to have some "extra power" that matches some more expensive upgraded MD's is a good one ![]() Somehow like "Upgrading my MD" ![]() ![]() Every possible comment on this extra coil will be welcome . Thanks. Mike |

With the 9 x 12 coil, pinpoint is dead centre of the coil, whereas it's just forward of centre on the stock coil
I think any depth advantage will be minimal. The only way to properly compare, is by planting some test targets at various depths.

Alan, the shape of this coil is larger than the stock coil is. Normally should it give some more noticeable depht. ![]() Do you think this depends on the ACE's electronic circuitry already on its max. performance ?

I don't really know the technical details.
The larger coil should give you another couple of inches in depth, but you really need to check it against the standard coil, on items at a known depth. I can only go by my own results. With my test garden, it didn't seem to make a great deal of difference which coil I was using. Others may have different results.

Make what you will of these tests.http://www.detectortest.info/ Cant link to actual page but go to Hoembeek tests. You can compare large and small coils for Ace 250
I dont often go near trash filled areas so when I take a detector I want all the depth I can get. Some sites any machine will do the job:one particular site I visit coins hit a layer of stones at 8" or so and arent going anywhere else.My Ace with large coil hits these so I take it as its lighter and easier to use.I wouldnt take it with just the stock coil as Im not convinced. The only coin I hit at the bottom was a cartwheel twopence and thats a large one.In comparison to the price of the ace,the coil is expensive here, new ace £179,9x12 coil just under £100.Kind of expensive for an experiment although prices on e-bay have soared in last 6 mths. Were I to sell mine I would get a fair bit more than I paid for it.Dont really want to but as I have 3 now I dont know how much use it will get. |

before leaving for Argentina and finally back to Germany,
within the last days I stayed in my hometown I received a gentle invitation to hunt at a large area of fields. This invitation came from a whealthy landowner who owns many fields in an area where there is long forgotten battlefield from the civil war in the 1890's . He just stopped his Toyota by at the street and asked me if I had a MD and if I would be willing to hunt there because besides the CW relics, there is a legend that some treasure could have been hidden somewhere just at those fields too. Unfortunatelly I was no time left for me to do such a hunt anymore! Earlier had I heard, someone told me this very one person had the wright place to hunt. But I was shy to visit him - it is hard enough to ask for a permit. My sister met him casually and told him about me coming from Germany and my MD hobby... that's why he invited me - but it was already too late for me ![]() Should I know a month earlier he would give his permit, that would have been another story. But now I know, whenever I return I have a perfect (never hunted before) historic private place to hunt ! - The area is very large,it would take many days to do a methodical seach there. This is why I want the best possible deep seach coil available Here a pair of pics about the landscape in this zone. Thank you Blueonceagain for these links- I will watch them carefully Mike

What a shame that you couldn't take the offer up. Hopefully you'll be able
to in the future, it could be a productive site.

Be sure and stay in touch with him. That looks like a very nice place to while away some days in the future.
