Question Do You Tumble Before You CoinStar?

Do you bother to tumble before putting your found change in the CoinStar machine? How well do they really need to be cleaned up for the machine to accept them?

Coinstar all the time. Never tumble...it does not seem to mind if the coins are dirty!! I use the same coins at the vending machine at work. Dirty or not, still works just fine!!

I have noticed a lot less rejections if I tumble. But since my bank doesn't charge a percentage, I use them and always tumble out of embarrassment. Also it just feels like Christmas when you open the tumbler and see all the shiny coins.

Default Do you tumble before you coinstar

Ive tryed several ways, the coinstar a great way of turning .clad coins into pocket cash.recently i used the coinstar the coins were dirty the machine stopped counting.(see attendent)
the coins where all bunch together preventing the machine to count properly.the clerk told me to clean the coins .end of disscussion so i tumble them and take them to a bank. No fees that way.

Harbor Freight has a double tumbler (one copper drum/one silver) for $49. Look out for a good coupon and $40 OTD is doable. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=65840
Shoot I have more than that in clad ready to go. Thanks to the OP for jogging my memory. There also used to be a guy on here who made one from a PVC pipe and a motor.

I tumble mine before putting them through any coin counting machine. The one time I didn't I jammed the machine up and they had to call a maintenance tech in to fix it. Needless to say they were not very happy about it.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I do have a tumbler. I was just trying to see if skipping that step was worth it or not. It probably depends on how dirty the coins are without tumbling. I've had coins that cleaned up nice after tumbling but were rejected visually as fakes by people due to their uniformly rough and powdery surfaces after tumbling.
