Default Rules Change

Really ticked off at the SD Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP)..last few years I've put up with the rules they have established..Need a permit..ok..the folks at the office would give me the permit..usually make it good for all summer..fine..Use of Metal Detector ONLY authorized on the beach areas of the park..and only on certain beaches and only during the hours of 6:00am until noon. OK, I can understand they don't want the beach goers to be bothered by me as I swing over them as they try to sunbathe..so I would go early, be done by noon...would be nice to go after work but rules are rules..

Just got back from their office to get this summer's permit...NEW RULES..ONLY for use Monday-Friday (never on the weekend, no matter what time of the day)and only between 8:00am and 10:00am and you have to renew the permit every 30 days!!! I'm so ticked...the NY in me came out..had to has the guy "So let me ask you..do you tell the little kiddies who bring sand scoops, etc, they can't dig after 10:00am?".."Well, no"...."What's the difference" I ask..."Don't know, sir"...

I'm going to write the area director..and will probably do no good but will make me feel better...ok, I'm done venting..thanks for listening..

Good Vent

I have similar things here in MI not as bad but sometimes they make upsome really stupid rules.

I think that they get jealous about some one having a little fun.

maybe we need to start a ground swell or something.

Here where I live you can hunt the Corps of Engineers land but the rules are so vague that you couldn't convince a game warden of what the director told you over the phone if you TRIED. When you ask for specific things in writing they give you a sheet of paper that reads much like a typical kindergarten essay. ( Proving that their IS a difference between starting to learn and should have learned).

Yes you can hunt this great land but you can't dig. Kinda like giving a sixteen year old a Corvette and saying here it is but you can't drive it.

I would have explained what I meant by digging but on land where if you would accidentally scrape a small portion of bark from a tree you WILL be fined in upwards of $500, I didn't think it would matter.

I understand the need for the rules, permits and limitations but this is crazy.

My opinion on why rules are becoming more strict is because some of us do not follow the Code of Ethics and stand by them... We all will be hurt by the few who don't care if they ruin it for others... A local town not far from me has banned all metal detecting in the dirt because 1 man decided he was above the rules of our hobby and decided it was too much of a bother to fill his holes and take away his trash.

If I see a metal detectorist not filling holes or leaving trash I will have no problem turning him in... Same goes for tresspassing if I see someone where they don't belong I will turn them in no questions asked. I will not let some ruin my hobby.

And I can understand if they change the rules because of one of "us" not abiding by the decent rules of ethics we live by...but honestly, I have never seen another MDist out on the beach area in the 2 years I've been into the hobby..again, I'll draft a letter to the area manager...I'll keep everyone posted if I get a reply from him...thanks again for listening..

The old park in town has banned MDing. I was told to leave the park by the park police. I asked why the ordinance was not posted. His answer was if all the ordinances were posted for the park they wouldn't have a sign big enough. I asked if there had been a problem (holes) in the past. The answer was no. Rob

Bop

Beaches on East Coast are hit harder and many leave holes thinking the tide will fill them in but in the meantime a jogger can twist an ankle... We have similar laws on the books... you can detect but you can't dig and when I asked how do I recover the find they laugh and say without breaking the ground... makes a lot of sense.. Not.

Sounds like a pretty good Catch - 22...A lot of the best places over here are closed to MD'ing because some idiot or group of idiots left the grounds looking like a mortar range...I can't fault the authorities for that...it should be illegal for a kid to use a metal detector on public property without proper supervision..Period !...but there's another reason TH'ers get signaled out for unwarranted scrutiny....they are easy , and usually safe , targets...I don't notice the park employees saying anything to that bunch of cussing young men who've just torn the b-ball goal down for the second time in a week ; nor the other bunch of young men abusing playground equipment intended for children ; nor, for that matter, to the folks who bring their dogs to the park on a daily basis to relieve themselves in areas where kids play baseball....guess saying something to those young men or inconsiderate dog owners could lead to an unpleasant exchange ....but that 'ol nerdy Th'er , by himself , now that's a different story . Every park or corps land has some one in charge and you may find if you are pleasant and presant your self well the rules can be bent, egnored, and you may even get some tips on where to hunt. Works for me. Cladius.
