Question XLT Coils/Field Setup

I have a Spectrum XLT and have had moderate success with it. I have learned it pretty well. I mainly hunt for coins around old homesites and in fields. I was looking to upgrade to a new larger coil to help cover more ground in the fields but not lose sensitivity on coin sized targets. I would also like some information on tweaking the settings for maximum depth with the stock 9.5" coil. I want to get the most depth that I can on coin sized targets. Does anyone have any suggestions on a setup that I can use in the fields where there are not many targets that maximizes my depth? Thank you for your help.

give relic mode a try if you havent...theres a few things you can do like tweak the preamp gain a bit or tweak the AC sens. I use relic mode most often with mix mode turned on and drop my thresh hold down to about 7{to noisey if its much higher} and pretty much leave everything else the same. I dont care for the 950 coil to much,I prefer the 8" coil, it seems to preform much beter than the stock coil in most situations.

I was thinking about trying mixed mode to get that extra depth that I am looking for. Thanks Relichound!

Thanks for the tip cybersage. Hopefully whites will come out with a new 12" coil for the xlt soon. There are so many for the DFX and MXT but barely any selection for the XLT. I am really in need of a 12" for ploughed fields so hopefully soon.....

Hi Tony. I am with cybersage. Find you a hot shot coil. They are going to discontinue the XLT so a 12" spoked coil probably is not going to be made.

The second reason is that being that it is a solid coil it will slide over the ploughed ground easier where a spoked coil would get hung up on ground vegetation and dirt clods.

Third, the Sierra coils are of awesome quality. You may not be able to run it as hot as you are accustomed too, but this is good! The coil does it for you, your detector will run more stable, having a better signal to noise ratio will also give you better target VDI response.

I spoke to Jimmy Sierra again about a week ago. Since his head engineer of 25 years (Jim Karbowski) passed, he has had to retain a new manufacturer and has ran into some complications that has caused stock to temporarily run out. Look for new stock on his site starting Feb of 09.

Good luck!

I am not a fan of this coil. I bought one from Jimmy about a year ago, used it for a good while, then sold it to buy me a sunray probe. When I bought it, Jimmy said this was the last one he had. I did not like to too well. It gave weird signal readings and some false signals. Actually, I found very few coins with this coil. I could always change back to my stock coil and find coins where this one did not. Not to mention, it felt like you were swinging a Mack truck tire...

It's to bad that they don't make a good big coil for the XLT. It seems like they come out with a new coil for the DFX/MXT/M6 everyday but nothing for the poor old XLT. I could really use a big coil so I am quite upset.

no looks more like a toilet seat at the end of the shaft

but seriously the one i had for my xlt was a really good coil and very sensitive to, and they are pretty light for a big coil. i'd recommend it as well . Dan

I had the 15" inch Blue Max coil for the XLT and found an indian head penny with it, but they say that thing could go 4 to 5 ft in the ground on large objects-didn't want to rent a backhoe to dig + it wore me out in about a half hour, I think It weighed more then my detector. It might work good in a large field or some other large area with little trash, It does cover alot of ground quick.

ever try any of the "hot" programs?

I really like Terry's 15 preamp program.
