I just started MDing about 2 weeks ago so i thought I'd ask this. First, do you always keep the trash you dig up or do you leave it? Second, other than the obvious of throwing it away later, what else do some of you do with trash?

Non - I have been detecting 28 years now and if I were just starting and know what I know now I would A. keep a barrel at home for copper, brass, etc. as prices are now high. B. I would dig most signals. I do that now and sure do dig a lot of goods - plus the trash of course. C. I always dump the trash but anything that just might be a goodie but not sure of,then take it home and check then toss if if so.
Good luck, Low & slow, Steve in so az __________________ |

I always take "pack out" any trash that I might dig up (I also go as far as picking up any trash within reason while at the site). I have a utility belt with several different compartments and one of those compartments is just for the pop-tops,pull rings and all those funky little pieces of metal that we all dig up. At the end of my dig I just empty the trash compartment back home...If we take the junk with us then the next detectorist that visits the spot at a later day won't have to....Being a good steward of our environment is never a bad thing....

I always take the trash I dig with me. I wear cargo pants or shorts and one pocket gets all the junk. Big stuff I throw into trash cans when and where I'm hunting if available. Otherwise I empty my junk pocket into a 2 gallon bucket in the trunk of my car.
It's a good idea to pick up garbage I think because in the event someone gives you a hard time you can demonstrate to them how you are picking up the area. Not to mention it makes it easier for you to detect the next time you go to that spot. Here's some pics! __________________ |

I wear one of those cloth nail aprons with two pockets. They used to be free at the lumberyard; now they cost a buck or so. I put my good finds in one pocket and trash in the other.
Never leave trash. If you leave it on top of the ground you're giving treasure hunters a bad reputation; if you bury it you'll just have to dig it again next time you hunt there. __________________ |

Z... that's some serious trash you got there
When we hunt a new beach that we know is infested with chunks of iron we bring a white bucket and clean it out so we can hear the whispers of the good stuff another time

i always pack out whatever trash i dig up. usually i carry a camo pouch with a bunch of little pockets for good stuff and a big pocket for trash. i bring it all home and throw it into a 5 gal. bucket. when the bucket gets full, i'll sort it out by the different metals and when i get enough i make a run to the scrap yard....then the money i get for the junk i'll put in my savings for a new detector or something else i may want/need a the time for detecting. everything is worth something.....if you dig a piece of iron thats worth a penny, then essentialy you just dug a penny.

Trash gets pitched into the trash can.
I'm starting to think that I need to save the pull tabs and copper/brass though. You could seriously make some money digging just copper wire and aluminum cans. I'm toying with the idea of digging and screening the local shooting range to salvage the lead, since it's like $1/pound now. Besides, it's good to get all the lead out of the environment, you know?

Scrap it! I just found out yesterday that copper is $2.90 lb. for #1 copper and $2.80 lb. for #2. Most of what you dig is going to be #2 since it's oxidized but still those strips of wire you find are probably worth more than the coins you're keeping.

Be careful what you call trash. A while back a guy almost threw away a Spanish coin he thought was trash. After he cleaned a little was when he realized he had something. I try to recycle what I pick up. Copper, aluminum, lead.

I've been tossing it, but I've found two sites that seem to be rich with copper, so I've started collecting it. I've two gallon sized jugs. One for copper and one for aluminum. I'm not even sure there's a scrap yard near by, but I'll look when they're full.
I never leave trash in the ground. I try to take even the non-metal trash, glass and plastic, though I'll admit I don't pick up all of the plastic I find, I do get most of it. __________________ |

Being Broke to the Max, I cart it all home. Brass in the bucket.
Copper in the other bucket. Aluminum in the other bucket. Trash in the trash. Iron/steel? It goes in the pile. $90.00 a ton last checked ,, someday I may have enough to work with. __________________ |

Our club members are supposed to take a pouch with them on club sites, to put their finds and trash in. Then it gets deposited somewhere where it won't get detected again. In the hedge or ditch at the edge of the field.
There are still some lazy b*******s who leave it by the hole, or put it back in the hole before refilling. |
