Welcome to the forum. My favorite in your price range is the Tesoro Silver µMax. Actually I even prefer it over much more expensive detectors. Steve.

Just look at that picture, isn't she a beauty .

Steve's lil µMax would fit the bill, or a Garrett ACE 250.

The ACE 250 would be a perfect start! We love ours!

Just to be fair here is the Ace 250, but I think everyone already knows what it looks like.

Many folks start with an Ace 250, I did. It is a good machine for the money but folks who find that they like detecting usually wind up upgrading fairly quickly. I think that the Silver might keep you happier longer than the Ace 250. I had my Ace 250 for about 3 months and then upgraded to a Tesoro Cortes and never looked back. The great thing about the Ace 250 is that I was able to sell it for no loss since I purchased it like new but used in the first place.

Good Hunting!!
Jim

It is a good idea to start low... however, if you are bitten by the 'bug'.. you will soon upgrade... once you are hooked on the 'sweet addiction'... the technology chase will soon follow... RickO
