Cool After all these years

Wow...First off , I'd like to thank all you guys and gals on the forum for all the info ,knowlege and great pictures of your treasures. I've been kinda lurking here for a week or so while I waited for my registration conformation and have already learned so much.
What led me to this wonderful hobby was My new found love of silver and gold coins and bars.
As I researched those I kept seeing more and more posts about MDing ,
and Since I've always wanted to try my hand at it I started looking for a decent entry level machine. I'm a 49 year old male now ,but when I was younger it seemed that the only ads I saw for a machine were in the $1,000 + price range. I had no idea that a useable machine could be had for as little as $100.00 which is what I recently paid for my Bounty Hunter Tracker IV.
It's really a good feeling after 30 + years of dreaming about searching for burried treasure that I'm finally getting to do it! I've only been out to the beach 3 times so far ,for about a total of 6 hrs detecting. My first hunt went like this-

When I got to the beach (Seal Beach , Ca.) Last Friday evening I turned on my machine for the first time out of doors and went to lay the coil down in the sand to pick up my bag of digging tools and I kid you not, it signaled..
I dug on that spot and got a clad dime haha...I was hooked already.
My wife and I searched a couple more hours in that area and came up with pleanty of pull tabs and broken beach chair bits and pieces along with a couple clad quarters some pennies and a few nickels. As we were walking back to the car (up the beach) I continued to MD. I got a hit at the line where the sand meets the asphalt It was a 1947 SILVER Quarter. Wow I can't believe no one has found that thing before me. It was only about 2 " down.
I appologise for ranting on but I truely am excited and having so much fun!
The next day we dug a few more clad coins a key and what I think is a silver (Toe?) ring , it's stamped 925. I figure I'll go now and post a pic of some of the finds we made on our first weekend hunt.
Thanks again and wish me luck talking mama into an upgrade in the near future hehe.
Oh and I forgot to mention on Sunday we tried a sand bar on the jetty,( bad idea )The ad for my detector states that the coil is waterproof? but as soon as the coil hit the water it went crazy and started beeping like mad ,luckily I had also bought the small gold searching coil so I just switched over to that. I put the wet coil in a hot storage shed in my back yard and it dried out and seems to be working fine now. Can't wait for the weekend to get here! This time we're packing up the motorhome and going to spend the weekend around Huntington Beach. Happy hunting all!

Welcome to the forum DennDogg.
Looks like your off to a good start, if that toe ring is stamped 925 it is silver.
Your coil may be waterproof but it may not be submersible, that's why it went crazy when you put it underwater. Keep it out of the water and you should be o.k.

Sounds good.

Boy I wish I could hunt those beaches like that.

That sounds like lots of fun.

I'll bet the finds will improve as you get more hooked and
your brain gets tuned. Your brain is your most important tool.

I started with a $200 Bounty Hunter. We have no dealers around
here. I couldn't try them out before I bought them. The BH was
OK.

I thought cautiously about up-gradeing.

Glad I was cautious because after almost 10 months, I have
purchased 10 metal detectors. The BH was the only one
I bought new.

I didn't keep them all. I have 4 now. If there was a good dealer,
I may have avoided some of that.

If that sounds excessive, I guess it is. I have earned most of
my money back by selling my found gold. So it's not bad. It's
good as far as I am concerned.

Happy Hunting,

Welcome to our detector family. As you see this is an "addiction" that we all have. The main object of our hobby is to have fun and post our finds for others to see. Your Bounty Hunter should have a waterproof coil, but it will go crazy over wet sand. They aren't much good once you leave the dry sand. Well, no harm done. As they say, you live and learn. Good luck with your future hunts. Congratulations on your initial finds.

Welcome to the forum from the Lone Star State. Great finds for your first time out. Let your wife have a go with your BH. Then when she won't give it back, you have a good reason to buy a new one. Good Luck

Welcome to the forum DennDogg (and the Mrs.)

Sounds like you're off to a good start and caught the fever.

Yep, your Bounty Hunter doesn't like salt water at all. They make special detectors to handle salt water.
