Default 1st time in a tot lot, pouring rain, I think theres something to this..

my main focus was relics and silver at old homesteads,, really didn't even want to go to tot lots and I know I mentioned this in previous posts,, I'm a beginner and this was from this morning on my very 1st time out to a Tot Lot using my new compadre ,, after the 1st tot lot I was hooked and drove to 3 more. it took awhile with the 5 3/4 coil in the bigger play grounds but with the steady rain it kept the kids and dog walkers home... I was nervous cops would come or someone would say something just wasn't sure what to expect but it was quiet. I made an even $3.00 with one 50cent piece from 1972,, one sterling ring, some kids jewelery, and trash I hit on,, I adjusted the discrim knob right at the F on foil.. thank god I took my wifes kelly pointer she got with her fisher package friday because this change is tough to find and now I know I need a pro pointer or something decent. anyway I had a blast and this is going to be a cool hobby..

The Compadre shines @ the tot lots. Don't be afraid to drop that dial down a little further. You don't want to miss any of them gold chains. I ran my Compadre with the dial set between the I and the R in the word Iron on the face plate.

He's right.
These are just a few of my finds with the Compadre.
The whole top row, (except for that quarter which is only for size), all came in and were found with that knob at or below iron.

okay so run it below iron but then ya just got to dig on everything? I remember why I ended up turning the discrim up this morning, one of the tot lots had that modern playground set but all plastic coated steel structures and they must of been anchored thru big wide steel plates because I couldn't get near these things..

also on one of the other lots it had a bunch of big tractor tires all buried 1/2 way into the ground and my machine was hitting on the radials.

I do know what you guys mean though and if I want necklaces I have to go all metal or go home because they discrim out at the foil setting right.

Listen for a double beep when you are near large objects like fence posts and tot lot steel.
Big metal plates in the ground...I have no clue on that but you might not hear those double beeps in that case.

As far as chains, they won't react normally no matter what they are made of.
If the clasp is big enough you might be able to pick it up past iron, but maybe not.
That small, really thin silver bracelet on the top right pic in my post above beeped with the knob on the R in iron, but turn it slightly to the O and it was gone.

This much larger, thicker bracelet comes in as a zinc signal with the F2...

This rope chain silver necklace, (not the clasp), was a jumpy nickel signal again with the F2...

This really, really thin gold chain clasp can be picked up at about 3 inches at the most with a clear signal in all metal on my Compadre, the 8" coil on the F2 nothing...but the sniper coil on the F2 might have been able to pick up the clasp, the Vaq with my large DD at an inch or less at minimum disc or in all metal, barely.
I was flustered when I was doing this and I seemed to have invented a new word "sensity", but you get the jist.

The links in most chains will diffuse the return signal on most detectors so every chain I have dug with any of my detectors has been a complete surprise because not one of them came in as what the were supposed to as far as metal content.
I usually hunt with that knob near all metal and thumb up and down to figure out the signal before I dig.

In all metal I am assured of getting the deepest and picking up all signals as clear as possible...then I figure it out and decide what to dig.

Most of the time everything at the I in iron or a touch below I will dig...below that it has been either iron or trash for me so I usually leave that alone.
Keep in mind most of the signals I dig around that iron level are tiny frickin' pieces of foil.
If you want small thin chains or tiny gold anything this is just something you have to do.
The first time you find something good it all becomes worth it, however.

Skiwhiz...waiting on my commission checks from Tesoro and Fisher on the units I have helped them both sell.
As soon as they show up you will be taken care of.

okay got it,,, I remember hearing stuff like that too but it was like static almost.. the tot lot metal or plates I was refering to is when I got next to the footings for the structures I think the footings when down into the ground and then where welded to flat plate and then back filled. BUT it could of been the coil reading the footing itself from the side I'm not sure,, all I know is I couldn't get too close to those square iron footings and the buried tires.

Digger27,,, you did play a part in me buying the compadre I know that.
