Default Its impossible to find every wheat penny, barber quarter, bufflo nickel, etc Who agrees?

Just think about it, no matter how many coins we will find, we will never make it to zero, right now if we do it'll be years ahead. Just think about it. let me share some info from cointrackers.com about a select number of coins. There are six hundred eighty-four million,
six hundred twenty-eight thousand, 1943 steel wheat pennies that has been produced,

Over four billion memorials, that has been produced.

one million,
eight hundred twenty-five thousand, 1909 S wheat pennies that has been produced

six million,
two hundred fifty-six thousand, 1925 S Buffalo nickels

six million,
five hundred forty thousand, 1916 Barber quarters, and the list goes on.

I understand that years has gone by. So my best estimate, is that people that metal detects has found no where near the millions. We might of found at least 3 thousand coins, or more. However I can guarantee that we will never reach to the millions, because a lot of coins is either hidden away in the walls of a old house, covered over by a road, a good couple feet in the ground ( well some) Hidden away in a national park, or stashed away in the high crime areas, or even melted. However, in parks, yards, creeks, drive in theaters, woods, house remains, and so on, there is of course tons of coins buried inches in the ground instead of feet. How do you think we find them? Because we aren't digging to China. All i'm saying is that old coins can be anywhere in the world, and we will never find them all. Part of the reason is most dectorists doesn't wanna dig 3 feet into the ground lol, or its hard too.

So stop worrying about the lack of old coins, because there are still millions of old coins out there. We probably have found 5% of all the old coins, may not be any of that . So yeah old coins will always remain in the ground, because millions has been made, people has pretty much been to every patch of woods, and every area you can think of over the years.

So lets enjoy our hobby, dig responsible, and not let us worry about the lack of old coins, because the ground won't be empty of old coins anytime soon. Thats what I believe. Who agrees?

I agree, I find old coins on every hunt, and they're not running out anytime soon...

considering even if some md'ers find memorialsor wheaties they wont dig them then true they will never run out and dropped change is the detectorists ATM we all rely on.

One day maybe the copper pennies will be worth enough for md'ers to bend down and dig them knowing what they are but 2 1/2 cents in potential scrap price isnt enough right now for so many of us...personally i dig them all but then grunt when it turns out to be another zincoln

Empty of old coins? No. Scarce, yes! The old silver coins aren't being replaced you know. I see folks posting proudly on these boards all the time about finding three or four silvers. I started detecting back in the 1960s and all our dime, quarter and half finds were silver. Of course silver wasn't fetching the price it is now.

Probably next 10 years, but not now. There is still a lot of silver out there.

Default good to hear

For newbies in their first year of detecting like myself, this is good news to hear. The older coins outside of the wheat penny are still elusive to me, but I know my day will come.

If you think about the trees stopping us from finding or getting to the silver that was dropped on land and then a tree or something grew or was built on top of them..its going to take the tree dying or the building gone before they are even accessable...so no, not any time soon....when satalites can metal detect from hundreds of miles up to the square foot the coins metal wont matter so only age and rarity will matter...and we'll still dig for them but throw the gold and silver in the trash like zincolns...

I read on here somewhere/sometime ago that there are more coins in the ground than there are in circulation...and by a large margin. As new coins are minted that disparity obviously grows even greater. I also read an article several years ago that said if one detectorist were to recover ALL of the coins in the ground in the world that he/she would be the wealthiest person on earth...and that's just at the coins face value. Imagine what that amount would be when taking into consideration the value of gold and silver coins. Also, I think it's safe to assume that the number of coins found by detectorists number far into the millions...yet we keep losing ground (no pun intended) to the overall number every day.

Never...... It's still quite common to dig ancient roman coins over in England. They are all over 1000 years old and produced in much smaller quantities than our modern coins.

Probably but there is still millions of coins left. Metal detectorists right now are only a small handful of people. against millions of coins Most people in the usa doesn't even think about metal detecting, because most people today are lazy. I still think we have found at least three hundred thousand coins.

If they ever tear down that shopping mall or rip up that blacktop, and I can get in there, there won't be any old coins left when I get done with it.
