Found this beside the driveway of an old 1800's homesite 3"' deep. After doing a little research, it appears to be canister shot, though I have no idea why it would be in this area. It is very heavy. Don't have a scale to get exact weight. I also noticed it has what appears to be a little pin?? Any opinions?? Sorry for the blurry pictures. Camera is acting up.

This guy appears to have found the same kind...
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/to...ster-shot.html More info... http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/to...hot-maybe.html Why was it found there? Who knows...skirmishes took place all over and Independence had some activity. Troops might have traveled through your area and it fell off a wagon. http://www.ozarkscivilwar.org/regions/labette __________________ |

It appears to have an attachment point? I'd say possibly from a bell.

Digger27 -thank you for the links. One I hadn't found with Labette County on it. Amazing how many old maps are out there. Unsure that what I have is canister shot but that was the only conclusion I could come to after doing lots of searching. Found one on a website that looked exactly like this one but can't remember/find the link.
Iron Patch -thanks for your help. I suppose it could be from a bell but not sure. The little pin thing does not seem to be like an attachment, and doesn't seem to be broken. It's like a little nail almost and I can get my fingernail under the edge of it. I could probably pull it out but a lil' scared to. Haven't messed with it too much. Will have to look up a picture to see what a bell dinger (lol) attachment looks like. Thanks again! HH |

It's not a canister shot, given your description. Even the ones that look exactly right I always question, including the 6 or so I have found. The context of the find might make a difference, but not for that one. I only have one I feel half good about and that's because a cannon ball was found in the same field... but who knows for sure. |

Congrats, I found a lead grapeshot near me, In in NJ just across the river from Phila. The one I found just maybe from the British Troops from the Revolutioanary War as they marched from Phila to NY they went through the area where I found mine. They were cut off by Gen George at the Battle of Monmouth in NJ.
