I just use soap and water. If you put a couple drops of dish soap and rub a silver coin between your fingers under running water that usually does the trick. I have found that even using a tooth brush seems to leave scratch marks on silver since it's so soft.. I guess unless it's a key date it doesn't matter anyway. Hope that helps...

Take a piece of aluminum foil and line a bowl. Put some baking soda and some salt in the bowl and add your silver. Be sure the silver is in contact with the foil. Microwave a cup of water until it boils. Add it to the bowl and leave it there a while. The silver will bubble and release the tarnish. No harm to the silver at all. Much better than using dip solutions which can harm the metal. You may need to do this a couple of times depending...

I've heard of the tin foil in the sink with water and two tablespoons of salt. I thought the baking soda could damage the coins? I read it could strip a layer off on the clad coins...

just water and baking soda is fine make a paste rub on the coin lightly and rinse and it will be all shiny again.. just remember cleaning any coin will lose its value

I believe you can get it at hardware stores such as ACE and most likely at Home Depot.

yes, I've used this method and it works great. Sometimes I have to softly rub some baking soda and coins gently between my fingers after soaking.

If you are talking silver coins I would encourage you not to clean them, unless they were absolute junk with no collector value at all.

Silver coins? I just clean them with mild soap and water and maybe a soft cloth and/or my fingers. I did use CLR on my war nickel tho.. Was really crusty and had to use something and dont have electrolisys machine made yet. LOL

we have recovered a very old medalion with dark/black substance on part of it. I assume it is road tar. Can you tell me how to remove that without ruining the old medalion? Not sure what metal it's made of. It's rather light weight.

I've done it with silver jewelry and it worked well.
