Default Waterproofind your garret PP

Was curious how some of you came up with water proofing your PP. Ive been dreaming up some diff ways but havent seen anything i like yet. I dont like the silicon look plus i dont trust it. I was considering using some of that waterproof elastic emergency tape and wraping the button and volume area several times with the tape as its suppose to be water proof and very durable. Any ideas? I guess maybe i could take the pro pointer apart and try to water proof it from the inside as well?

I put mine in a vacuum sealer bag and seal it. I then put some black electrical tape over the tip so no holes get poked in the bag. It works but a more permanent waterproof idea would be nice. IMHO, Minelab should have made theirs waterproof. That would have been a major selling point.

Look up aquichigger on YouTube. He hunts creeks and rivers and he waterproofed his Garrett PP with silicone gel.

The way he does it voids the warranty though

silicone over the LED, power button and speaker. then use some plumbers tape(white teflon tape) on the threads of the battery door.

X2 the above.
You don't need to smear silicon over the whole Propointer like seen on You Tube. More silicon does not mean its more waterproof. Just the bare minimum is needed.

I filled in the speaker grid, small blob over the LED and popped the power button rubber and put a layer around where the rubber seals against the plastic. Beware - last means the button is now glued in. The plumbers tape will need replacing after every few battery changes but this is not a problem.

I did mine 10 months ago and use it on the beach a few times a week. I have no hesitation in putting the whole unit in water filled holes or muddy puddles etc. Nor do I hesitate washing it off under a running tap (the whole propointer - not just the tip).

Been thinking about this myself. May have a way to completely waterproof one without voiding the warranty. But I'm not sure I want to use mine for a guinea pig, Just incase.
Don't guess anyone has a dead pro pointer that they would want to donate for the cause?

How well does vacuum bagging the ProPointer work? I've been really wanting to waterproof mine for local creek hunting.

i would think it would work fine unless ya use the tip to scrape around and rip the bag.

I was thinking of using a waterproof bag that I use for my kayak. I haven't done it yet but have been meaning too.

Maybe some electrical tape around the tip? Or maybe the black heat shrink stuff.

Or something a bit more substantial over top of the vacuum pack like a plastic "foot" used on the base of tubular steel chairs? Tape can then be used to hold it in place and then wrapped around to protect the PP further up. Not pretty but no permanent mod's done on the PP itself.

I vacuum sealed mine a while ago and no problems at all and as a bonus it still looks like brand new!

I tried that also but after I turned it on it wouldn't shut off until I punched a hole in the bag I'm curious did this happen to you to?

Although I don't have the nerve (or the cash) to try this myself, I think I have a great solution. Ever see the Duct Tape Boat segment on "Mythbusters"? They had a basic framework and made the boat's hull and sail completely out of duct tape. They also poked holes and tried to repair those holes with duct tape. What they found out was that if you apply the duct tape to a dry surface, it will adhere quite well. If you apply it to a wet surface, it will not stick well enough to repel water. I would think a good seal over the speaker with duct tape and teflon tape on the battery compartment, that would work. I guess layered tape would work on the light location.

If there is a way to take out the electronics and just test it with the PP shell, I would try it.

I just did this to protect the tip of mine but i bought palsti-dip and dipped my pro pointers tip in it! and the good thing is if you want if off it peels of. You can do the whole thing if you want. it comes in a spray can to. Lots of people in the RC community use it to water proof there rc cars and trucks!

I wonder if that spray on sealer you see on TV would work. Just put a small piece of tape over the speaker to keep the stuff out of it and spray the whole thing. Probably void the warranty though.

Very '50 Shades of Gray' thinking...even get 'extra length' with a sensative tip..

But then handling something like that in the park would freak the parents out to no end..although that did work for the army in vietnam and korea, stopped junk geting into the barrels.

You do not want junk in your barrel....
