Hi,
I have a Bounty Hunter lone star. I have been using it for about a month now but still not sure if I am using it correctly. Does anyone out there own or have experiences with this detector? Any info would be great. Thanks |

I bought one at the PX for a backup detector. Haven't really used it too much really. I did find a .22 Long Rifle shell at approx. 4 inches though. Since it doesn't have a pinpoint setting, you will need to learn how to "wiggle" your coil. The manual was pretty straight forward. What I plan on doing is taking the Ace-350 and the Lone Star out at the same time. Once I have decided to dig a target with the ACE, I will scan the area with the Lone Star to see what happens. Good luck.

I have one that I bought used for $30.00. Whoever had it didn't take care of it and it looks really rough but it still works. Since I didn't want to leave one of my better detectors in my trunk in 100 degree weather while I was at work, I took it with me. I stopped of at a tot lot for a short hunt on the way home. It was too hot to hunt much longer than half an hour. I ended up finding sixy-four cents. There are times that I haven't done as well with higher priced detectors.

I've had a Lonestar Bounty Hunter for about 9 months, it was my first detector. I have found a lot of stuff with this little detector. It sure is a coin magnet, and is a great starter for beginners. I mostly used the 'all metal' mode, because what i didn't like about the detector, is that the discrimination knob wasn't labeled with the different metals it discriminated. However there is a discrimination chart for the Bounty Hunter on line, but i never found the time to look it up, it would've been more convenient with the discrimination knob labeled. other than that, the detector works real good, and is a heck of a detector for beginners or kids. I am selling mine for a Tesoro Silver Umax, because it was time for a new detector for me. I hope you enjoy your Bounty Hunter.

Thanks for all the input. I am thinking now about getting a better unit that show depth. Is this a good idea? I live in NW GA and have tons of farms to hunt and civil war sites. I want to have the best detector for these location.

I am fairly new to this hobby and started on a borrowed BH Tracker IV.
I found out that Metal Detecting is an exercise in communication and is a relationship that you develop with the machine. Learn the basics of how the machine is trying to talk to you. if you can't understand the machine, then you will have a tough time. As a side effect, metal detecting will make you a better communicator with people, as you will have a better understanding of how to listen, evaluate, and then form a response. Most of it depends on what you want to find and how you set up the machine. I have been coin shooting with mine and have gotten good at finding pennies, dimes, and quarters, but not nickels. I have tweaked the knobs a little and have been hitting my yard again in an effort to find a nickel. I had 3 solid, repeatable hits in the nickel range, I called pulltab before digging and guess what? Pulltab, and so were the next 2 digs. Have you built a test garden for yourself? Gather some items, nail, pulltab, coins, wrap them in dark plastic or paper towel so you can't see what they are, put them out in the yard and then set the detector to All Metal. I usually run Sens at 1100 position. Put disc/notch all the way left. Sweep the targets and look at the display. Then turn the disc/notch up to the next position on the clock and then sweep again. Just keep repeating that until you understand what the LS is telling you. Then you can repeat the whole process using the Discrimination setting and the Auto Notch. After a few sessions out, you should be able to start figuring out what you are going to dig up. I dig everything, but the real fun is figuring out if I am right before I dig. Good Luck with the Lone Star! |
