Thanks Poppa and thanks all! Still just thrilled about it... although it has set the bar pretty high... I don't worry about finding the oldest coin anymore or beating my personal oldest, because I'll never match this unless I get to the UK... It's kind of fun to have a trump card amongst my hunting buddies though...
I absolutely love it, and people I have shown it to who know nothing about metal detecting think it's amazing and want to go try 'treasure hunting' !! It was a dumb luck find, but the result of spending many (too many) hours out in the woods!! Dug an 1800's oddball coin today - you just never know what you might come home with in your pocket... That's why MD'ing is just such an incredibly fun and interesting past time... Cheers, BB

I had a late 1500s trump card for quite a while until a 1300s silver was dug beside me. That's when I surrendered and called the game over.

Default Great Find!

That's a super find. Nothing can replace the thrill of finding such a piece.

I have read that the Hessians were present in number in the Maine and Mass area and a few settled following the revolutionary war. I wonder if you have stumbled on a revolutionary camp?

The coin may have been a good luck token to a soldier. One really wonders. I know I would hit that area again. Keep us updated!

This is a really cool find! Wonder if there's any historical tie to the one's you said they found in Jamestown all the way up in Maine? That'd be an interesting lead to run down!

Even though you say there common in Europe.....wouldn't it be like finding a U.S. 65' quarter somewhere in Russia? HAHA, how'd that get there! The story is the treasure!

Congratulations for sure ...... I wondered what a "Jetton" was and found this with a search ......

Jetton- A counter; an early form of the chips for calculating the score in cardgames. It was a piece of metal, ivory, etc., with an inscription or design; hence, a token, a medal. From French jeter, to cast; to cast up, calculate. The jetton became a collectors' item; Snelling in 1769 wrote a book entitled View of the Origin, Nature, and Use of Jettons or Counters, especially Those Known by the Name of Black Money and Abbey Pieces.

Man, I've been all over that area since many times and haven't found so much as an ox shoe out there. I still can't believe you got so lucky... Truly a shot-in-the-dark bullseye. One of the best hunting experiences I've ever had, and it wasn't even me who found it! Much belated 'gratulations, dude...

i am a bit at a loss for words. My good friend and i got out in the woods tonight for a night hunt, the woods were glowing orange from his coleman lantern... We found ourselves on an old road unexpectedly, which i headed up while he worked it slowly... I came to a ridge and decided that it might have been a nice picnic spot back in the day, as you would have been able to see water in the distance back when it was cleared... About 50 feet along the ridge i got an iffy tone that settled around 72 - thought i might have an indian. When it came out of the soil i saw it was flat, and flipped it over expecting to see a button shank, and then there wasn't one. I called my friend over and he held up the lantern and blew the dirt off it... And we saw the design... It just *felt* old. We dug a few more items up there, and then headed home after taking in a few landmarks. Well, just ran the coin under water, no scrubbing, and was trying to make out the writing while my friend was researching online... He calls out, "hey, is this it?' and there was the design on screen... A jetton (merchant coinage) from the mid 1500's. Holy s$#*!!! After looking at more images online, this same design is found from the 1500's through the 1600's, and i believe even into the early 1700's. So i have no perfect match yet on the lettering, and no date... But one thing is for sure - it's old. Very hopeful to get an id - so fortunate it's in good shape. A similar coin to look up online is the nuremberg rose/orb jetton of hans krauwinckel ii, struck 1586-1635. Unfortunately the other side would be very helpful but it is hard to get anything off... I just simply cannot believe i dug this way out in the middle of the woods, at night... It truly felt like finding treasure. I may never dig a more interesting, or older item in my life... Who knows... But for now, here is the photo - it has certainly blown my mind, hopefully you'll all feel it worthy as well... Happy hunting to all... Bb
wow...

Thank god you didn't scrub it thinking it was a chucky cheese token or something... like I probably would have. Congrats on the amazing find!
