Default HELP!! Almost Impossible

I was hunting at a school the other day and this object came up and it looks like a coin but I am unable to tell. The weight is 8.97 grams, its a little larger than a quarter and stupid me scratched it a little. When I place under water I do see some sort of outline in the middle however, that could be an optical illusion.

I am at the point of What to do next?

It rang up in the dime range for my Fisher F5 and a number of 73.

Don't know what to do, the edges are not to bad and really not sure

May be a token.
Are there any letters at all visible?

a little soak in olive oil might help. it might not.
i've dug up several copper "things" which i believe were coins, but unfortunately some of them will end up in the un-identifiable pile. acidic soil can do a pretty good job of totally ruining some copper coins.

I can't see anything on this object, it feels totally flat and even if it is a coin prob not worth anything in this condition.

Maybe take a good close up of it and manipulate that image via computer. Contrast, sharpness etc. Even color! Might make something "pop out".

Could be a Large Cent piece. I have seen a few that look a lot like that. Then again, it could just be a copper punch-out. Hard to tell. I would invent a story and mount it in my man-cave!

I checked to see if its magnetic and its not, how do you use the computer to see the images better? any suggestion? Terry is prob right, most likely a copper punchout since the disk is quite smooth but you never know - Terry, I got this on the north shore of long island at a local high school.

In the first photo, there are two dark areas in the 2 o'clock position... I see a little roundness under the the first dark area... Also, in about the 3 o'clock position, there are some straight lines that look too perfect to be corrosion... Or are those elements just an illusion?

Yeah get the crud off with the olive oil let it soak in it for a few days. If you have a dental pick you can lift the crud off in patches sometimes.

27mm could be LC, my 1844 is 27mm.

Olive oil is a slow slow process & may not yield much info.

Get it wet (h2O) , use magnifier.

Look at it from different angles in dimmed room using LED lighting source.

It looks just like the 1700's George II halfpenny I dug up on Sunday. Looked smooth and flat until I cleaned it up a little. It was 28mm.

hey guys, i went an got the olive oil and soaking right now, i looked at a coin book and it looks like it might be this? I did place it under the water again and can see an outline similar to the flow hair cent? This will be interesdting and it was only 4" in the ground, hmm or an optical illusion

dont think it could be the 1793 since the weight is way off mine weighed 8.97 and the 1793 weighs 13.48g

this picture looks similar

That's what I'm saying, I think it's a liberty cap because the round part by the two darks areas looks like a top of the head... if you follow it down, you can possibly see the front of the face... and those straight lines could be parts of the word Liberty. I'm just taking a guess though.

I think you might be right film, a liberty cap is cool, it would be nice to get a definitive answer on this baby.

hey film, the liberty cap though is 4 grams heavier than my l;ittle sucker? I am not sure how much 4 grams weighs but wondering if it could be reduced that much due to age?

Update - I looked at it again and I can see more of an outline, it looks like a liberty cap cent, I can see the hair piece, can you believe this? man I found at a high school

Holy smokes, that coin is from the 1790's!!!! I noticed more of an outline and this is what it would look like, i can see the hair part but its still soaking

http://www.coinlink.com/CoinGuide/us...ent-1793-1796/

I am hoping

How long do I let this sit in Olive oil and then what is my next step? It is a liberty large cent from the 1790's since I cans ee the head outline but not sure of what to do next. It's sitting in olive oil right now and no rush to take it out.
