Default My first silver of the year and a first ever!!!

A couple of weeks ago I was working the yard at my grandparents home and came across the '53 rosie. Afterwards my grand dad and I were talking and he said "I know somewhere you should hunt let me see if I can get you in." On Monday he said we had the go ahead so we worked the site Tuesday night only turning up a few zincolns and some nails. Unfortunately it's a very difficult site with overhead wires on all 4 corners of the property. The entire property has interference from the cables and if I want to run without chatter I can only go one bar on sensitivity. I went ahead and stayed with full hoping to distinguish some of the higher more solid tones. Glad I did. Wednesday nights finds were some more zincolns, 1944 & 1947 wheat, a few old buttons, a state of illinois 1 1/2 cent tax token, and a very rough but beautiful 1903 O Barber Dime. My first barber ever!

Regardless I must give all thanks to my grandfather for leading me to the site and all the many people on here that have helped me learn my pro that much faster!

Nice finds --- is that 1 1/2 cent token silver also? I love seeing the history that is unearthed across America through this forum.

I'm not sure if it is silver yet. If you tap it and the barber on a table edge lightly they both have the same ring to them they're nearly the same size, weight and everything other than shape. It does have some petina on it that resembles that of what silver does and there isn't any corroded spots like what aluminum tokens have. If I had to guess I'd say it is, however they were used primarily through the early 1900's-1940's so I would assume that they would have made them as cheap as possible (not silver) for the depression era, but I'll have to run a slab test on it later to know a little better. Will post updates.

Congrats, you are off to a flying start! 44bulldog found one of those tokens a few weeks back too...I'm pretty certain it's made of aluminum or an alloy because it was slightly corroded. Keep it up and thanks for sharing

I was definitely thinking an alloy of some sort as well. Rang in between zincoln and dime on the pro.
