Post Another Kansas MDer Wanabe

Howdy folks, I just joined the forum and thought an introduction was in order. My interest in MD started in 1972 while I was stationed a Nellis AFB, Las Vegas. I overheard some of my fellow airmen talking about using metal detectors to hunt for treasure in the desert, so I asked about it. Well . . . long story, short, I bent their ears until they invited me to join them that weekend at one of the many abandoned mining camps in Nevada. Nobody found anything of great monetary value, but I was hooked on the whole process of treasure hunting with metal detectors. I bought one of the suggested models the next day. I believe it was a Bounty Hunter of some sort, maybe a BH II. It had a gold anodized aluminum box. I found a lot of bits and bobbles with it and it was very cool to dig up something that someone used many years ago. I remember feeling the history of the places we hunted at rather than just reading about it. We were all pretty amateurish in our efforts and after reading the posts on this forum realize I was probably not getting the best performance from my machine. But I still had a great time and continued MDing until my discharge in 1974. I was married by then and the task of working and rearing a family took its usual precedence. So the squeaks and squawks of my MD fell silent. I truthfully don’t even remember what happened to it. My wife may have sold it in a garage sale.
My interest is rekindled again due to a Western & Eastern Treasures magazine I bought at the grocers a few weeks back. The ads for the new crop of MDs blew me away. For a gadget freak like me, it was like a kid in a candy store. So I’m researching for my next MD purchase starting in the threads of this forum. I can see I have a steep learning curve ahead, not only in the technical aspect of the machines but where and when to MD when under the watchful eye of a now very skittish public. I did a little geocaching and when someone is poking about public parks and such searching for caches it attracts attention. Doing so with a MD at least identifies you, for better or worse, as an MDer.
I was pleased to see several members here reside in my area and I hope to meet them. There may be a MD club in my area as well. My experience in Nevada MDing with others who could share their experiences and knowledge made for an enjoyable experience indeed. So I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you and share in this most interesting hobby.

Like Patton said, we have a number of forum members in this area. If you still haven't got a new detector, send me a PM and I can loan you one If you want to go for a hunt. Due to car troubles, I am pretty much limited to a couple of parks in the south end.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I hunt with Silversmith45 and with Patton on a regular basis. I own and use three detectors so if you want my assessment of any of them let me know.

I think with all the guys in the group we have just about every detector covered!

HH!
