Just to clarify I posted a Wanted To Buy not something for sale. I doubt I would buy from someone with a low rating also but I would sell something to just about anyone. Lol

I actually just bought one from someone on a not so friendly forum I guess that had 148 rating.

Gonna go look for some threads to post on to up my post count

I have 1,462 posts but I'm not sure if there are 100 significant posts in there

Since we're on the subject, I've posted classifieds in the past and I recently went to post some accessories for sale. When the admin contacted me I said, ' Are you kidding me? " at least 30 days and with at least 100 significant posts" - my Join Date was 07-22-10. Just because I don't say much doesn't mean I don't read much. How many times can you say, "nice find"?!'

The guys who voted for 100 posts are the ones who are missing out. I'll just sell my stuff on another website.

Luckily that rule came into play long after I joined.

Otherwise, I'd still be working on my first post...

It is, and garbage posts like the OPs should be deleted from the count. The 100 pot rule exists for a good reason. This is a forum to talk to like-minded people about our hobby of metal detecting. It's not a garage sale or craigs list for anyone to come on and hock whatever they want. It's also to prevent scammer from coming on trying to buy things without paying for them.

It still protects us all, whether you are buying or selling. You could tell several people that you want to buy what they are selling so they tell everyone it's sold, then you stiff them on the sale and back out. They just lost your sale and maybe many others that would have paid as expected but bought something else thinking this item was gone.

Want to get a reputation quick? Stiff someone on a classified, word will get around fast and no one will do business with you again.

Not trying to be unfriendly or argue, but the original post was about posting that you want to buy something. The scenario you described could be pulled off by any jerk with any number of posts. They could PM the sellers and cause the same problem. Maybe PMs should only be allowed for folks over 100 posts. But if I'm selling something, I wouldn't tell other interested people it's sold until I put it in the mail. Until that time, I'd tell people it's pending and if it falls thru, the next interested party gets the item in the order the inquiries were received. We have to take responsibility for effectively communicating and for being Internet savvy. Can't expect any organization to always have our backs.

I totally understand wanting to protect the membership and that's excellent and appreciated. But at the risk of some dead-horse beating, if I'm selling something to someone who posted that they want to buy it, I'm not shipping anything until the money is in my account or a check clears. I just don't see where there's an exposure to risk there.

Now, if the purpose of the rule is to keep this forum a more or less private community, then I'd say the 100 post rule should also have a tenure restriction as well. So what if I have 100 posts in 1 week. I still wouldn't have been around long enough to connect with others and get to know them. I wouldn't be much of a citizen of the community yet. Well, I guess that's covered by the "significant posts" concept.

To call the original post "garbage" or "useless" doesn't seem very friendly to me. (not saying you did, but others seem to have that opinion). There was good logic behind it. Maybe it touched a nerve because of the wording, but even the US constitution has provisions for review and ammendment.

Over & out.

Default Why you ask?

Scenario 1, WTB. Hi, my name is Tom, I just joined the forum yesterday and I am looking for a sniper coil for my F2. Long time member Joe has a coil to sell that meets specifications. They PM each other, the deal is made, paid for and coil sent. (sub scenario) Coil never finds it's way to Tom, coil reported cracked by Tom, Coil badly scratched, Tom unsatisfied, wants money back. Joe refuses to believe coil never made it to the buyer. Joe becomes a "dirtbag" after 7000 posts and 7 years a member. Can't happen?, It has....why we have the rules.

Scenario 2, WTS, Tom has 5200 posts and 4 years a member. Joe joined last week, specificly to unload some extra detecting related items. He needs money for bills. "I am selling my DFX, I don't want to but I am laid off and the rent is due"
I paid $950 2 years ago and am willing to sacrifice it for half. A like new
dfx used 4 times. $475.00 shipped. What a deal, the payment made, and the item shipped. What Joe neglected to tell Tom was that even though it was used only four times, it was dropped once........in the water. Tom tries to contact Joe, Hello, Hello, no reply to PMs, email,. Can't happen? it has.

What might seem unfair right now may save you some skin down the road.

Rules is rules

Buyers/Traders
Be advised before making ANY purchase or trade to KNOW WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH !!!!!!!

The owners, administrators and moderators are not responsible for losses due to scams or any other losses that you may incur.

We the "management" will do our best to weed out scammers and spammers when we are aware of them. This type of activity is not tolerated.

For those who are contemplating any dishonest transactions: The metal detecting forums as a whole are a small community. Bad news travels fast. You leave an electronic "fingerprint" which can be traced. If necessary this information will be transmitted to the appropriate agencies for aid in corrective action and or prosecution.

A list of "personna non grata" will be kept and updated as necessary.

Without putting much thought into it, the rules on WTB did seem, to me, unwarranted at first. However, the after sale issues brought up by some members, such as the buyer claiming the item never arrived, was damaged, etc., convinced me that the legitimacy of the buyer is just as important as with the seller.

Now, one could still argue that buyers and sellers can themselves determine what constitutes a trusted trading partner. Perhaps one person is satisfied with 50 quality posts, another only with 1000 and more. Or possibly a forum member would be willing to deal with a new member locally where the transaction is performed in person. So given that, the rules can be seen as something akin to government overreach. Each member, as an adult, can decide what is a safe trade. I suppose members can still use their own requirements when they prefer values more strict than the forum rules (and should include that information with the ad posting).

Another could add to the debate that the forum administrators will verify (for example) that there are truly 100 significant posts by the member placing a WTB, so there is value to that process. The seller does not need to go through the posts of the buyer to see for themselves. However, that does convey a certain responsibility on the forum administrators and they have no liability in the matter. If, after a sale went bad, the seller checked and felt that the buyer did not really have what they believe to be 'significant' posts, too bad. So it comes down again to the trading member being vigilant and responsible on their own; regardless of forum rules.

One area where suppression of ads by the forum is useful is to prevent proliferation of ads by hawkers, hucksters, and other shady non-member types.

If significant posts are gauged by word count, this might be my first toward 100!
