Default Historic aerials

Historic aerials now has old topo maps as well as aerial photos. I know that not all locations are available but if so then it can be a very useful tool. Here in Wichita we have aerials going back to 1938. Now we also have topo maps going back to 1940.
Acme mapper is still my favorite though.

Cool! My town has aerials from 1962. That's good enough.

Even when I am not looking for MD spots, I find it pretty cool to see what Wichita looked like back then.

I think it's a great resource, but I wish you could manual-align the overlay maps as they don't quite match up sometimes. Kinda defeats the purpose for the MD'r.

its very simple.......in the search box just type in whatever location you want to search, then in the "overlays" box click on "all roads", in the "compare" box click on "slide", click on the oldest date on the left side of the screen(in my area its normally sometime in the 40's), now click on the most recent date on the right side of the screen(normally 2008), below the "overlays","compare", "survey" and share box you'll see a slide bar, just move that slide bar left to right and it will overlay the 2 dates you picked. you can also just drag your cursor around to move the map and also use the wheel on your mouse to zoom. alot of times i'll also use the "survey" feature and measure distance from set points (this is handy measuring distance from a road to a location in the woods)

Thanks! After I posted that question I played around with it and figured all that out.

I've seen some posts (I think I have anyway) where people claim to overlay these maps with Google maps or the like. I think the built in overlay is good enough for me.

I noticed a purchase button in the upper right. Is the better resolution without the watermarks worth the $20.00? I guess 20 bucks ain't gonna break the bank to show a little support for a cool site.

One of the reasons I love this forum!

I am new to this hobby, and although it does not have my current location (Germany)... I am now using Historic Aerials for scoping out locations to hunt back home when I finally get to return next year!

Thanks for the resource!

Basically, all the 20 bucks gets you is a single picture without watermarks. I purchased a photo from the 1934 survey of my areas and was sorely disappointed with the results. The picture, though large in MB's, was heavily compressed and did not show additional detail not already available on the free version. The absence of the watermarks was the only real benefit. I complained to the company and they were very nice. They explained the 1934 photos aren't great source material, but was all that was available. He did advise that I zoom out for a more detailed picture, but since I needed to see something close-up, that won't work. In the end, he offered a refund.

Personally, I feel that the price point is too high. I wouldn't have been inclined to ask for a refund on the photo if it wasn't so high to begin with. For that price, I would expect better detail and/or a physical print in the mail. $20 would be a good price for a 5 or 10-pack. Afterall, it's only 1's and 0's. It's not like there is any service being provided.

Otherwise, it's a great resource for MD'rs.

another good one with older topo maps is historic map works, some of those maps also have an overlay feature depending on location

Check out your computer most of them have a graphics card in them now and you may be able to hook up two monitors if you have two ports. i have two screens and i put google earth on one and any other old aerial pics on the other if i cant overlay. you can pick up a second screen for next to nothing even at a garage sale.

I love that site. My family used to tell me what our neighborhood looked liked before they built the highway 2 blocks from our house. After finding Historical Aerials on this site I finally got to see what it looked like. My brother was right, it was a great place to grow up as a kid. Nothing but woods.
