Default Yard Finally Surrenders Silver Coin

Gemmy and I have been convinced that the yard in the house were we live holds silver coins but have never been able to find any. The house is old enough to have been built with square cut nails, is located on a very busy corner, across the street from a school and a church with a large congregation and is also along the route where a parade has been held for nearly 50 years or better. Nor has this yard, to the best of my knowledge, ever been detected.

We have pulled 4 or 5 wheat pennies from the yard, some nice silver jewelry and some interesting relics such as a 1934 commemorative coin/medallion produced by International Harvester to celebrate the 100 anniversary of the reaper. Yet, no silver coins. Till this morning.

With all the nails and other junk in this yard I decided that I needed to start digging a little out if I wanted to find silver. So, last weekend I started digging some of the signals I normally would ignore and pulled a nice 1945 D Wheat penny and a few zincs. Yesterday I put on the sniper coil and started a slow hunt of the yard. We found more cut nails and one interesting relic a VERY well preserved skeleton key. Today, we got out real early (This corner is so busy you can only hunt very early on weekends otherwise it is just too loud) and turned up a crusty copper penny. A few minutes later in between iron signals we got a nice 79-81 return and decided to dig. There 4 or 5 inches down was a beautiful 1936 P Washington Silver Quarter.

I really think there is more silver in this yard and plan to hunt it as much as we can. Sorry for the poor quality photo but my camera batteries are dead and I used my phone. The coin is really in great shape. I didn’t nick this one with the digger and was careful not to rub it and thus avoided scratches.

Nice finds Mike! I'm kinda in the same situation as you are...I swear my yard has some silver coins, but I haven't found them yet. Can we see a picture of your International Harvester medalion? Keep it up, no doubt your yard has more silver!

Weeding out some junk, the sniper coil and a slow search I think made the difference. Now I'm wondering how many more silver's are there.

No problem at all on the photos

Mike- Todays find has sure sparked a bit more energy in me. I must say I sure have been missing the hunting time we both had last year. Oh well, guess we'll just have to rearrange our priorities again

Sounds a lot like my yard as well. Dug all the good signals, and left with deep iron, mostly nails. The junk, trash, broken glass, and lots of nails start 6-7 inches down, and figuring that they brought in fill dirt, rather than clean up the yard, at some point. Found a bunch of wheats, a bent skeleton key, lots of house keys, car keys, padlock keys as well.

Past month or so, if it doesn't look like a good day to hit the curb strips, been hitting the yard, digging any repeatable signal, that isn't solid iron. Picked a few more wheats, mixed in with rusty nails. Should be silver, just that it's too deep to accurately detect with my current machine.

Thanks everyone.

Harvey, that's the way our yard it, though I'm certain there is no fill. Did those iron signals out when you can as they may well be hidding good targets.

Gemmy, this find has me charged up and ready to put more time into hunting.

Yes I was Z. My first silver find was in this yard, a silver wedding ring and a silver earring and they were made with the sniper coil as well. I plan to use it more often.

The 4" coil for the F2? Absolutely, get it out and give it a try. I plan to use mine a lot more, this is three times we have found silver with it, 2 pieces of jewlery and now a silver coin as well.

Let us know how you do with it as there are several others on the forum who have the F2 and a sniper coil.

Mike how deep will your deepest coil go?

I've had the most luck with Silver and older coins being at 6" and deeper. Not that there aren't any more shallow than this.

Also for my setup (ACE-250 w/ an after market coil 10x14) I've found that digging the iffey signals can really pay off. When I first got my machine I generally only dug things that showed on up on the LED as a very positive ID. After learning my machine more I've found out that more often than not silver dimes bounce around a lot on my machine from Dime to Penny and sometimes down to the Nickel tones. So a lot of times those coins were not necessarily positive IDs and were something I probably would have passed up in my younger MD days.

Congrats on your Quarter, keep hitting that yard I'm sure there's more too from what you said. The Harverster coin is cool!

Thanks Seawulff. I have a 10" coil and, depending on conditions, have found items a soild foot down. The 10" coil is less senistive than the smaller coils and right now I'm having issues with it again-after Fisher worked on the detector and replaced the coil. Now and then the 8" coil will hit something deeper than 6"

I agree that with the soft loam we have around here most silver coins are 6" or deeper. The soil around here is the best in the world for crops but swallows coins.
