Found this in the woods in between the roots of a big oak tree. I cleaned it up, which scraped some of the outer crust off exposing lead. (not sure if I should have done that.)
It weighs 270 grains. I don't have calipers, but by my best measurements was 15mm in diameter. (not totally round, somewhat squished so kind of difficult to measure) It has a wider indented ring around the top, then a small flat bump at the top. You might see it in the pic. I'm pretty sure it is a musket ball, but looking for confirmation and any ideas on date, etc. Thanks for the help. |

Based on the weight the math calculates the diameter to be a .58 caliber if it were round instead of squished.
Would a .58 cal ball be used in a .58 cal smooth bore, or would that be too tight, and instead be in a .60? Anyone know about old smooth bore arms? Trying to figure out if this was civilian or type possible rifle used. |

No, I think it's a magic mushroom top.split it open. Is it purple inside?
Can I have it Bro? I'll trade you a stylus gage for it. __________________ |

That's a pretty common musket ball, maybe .54 or .58 caliber, both of which are common calibers.
