Going on vacation help!!

I live in the western part of west virginia and i am heading to williamsburg on vacation in the end of june. My wife and I plan on riding my bike down to Virginia Beach to do some metal detecting. Can anyone tell me about any laws to be aware of or any pointers? This will be my 1st time beach hunting and i need some advice. Don't want to get into any trouble.
