Congradulations on the find. That sounds like alot of fun, night hunting in the woods with a lantern. Im gana have to try that. I wander if that coin might have been a family heir loom worn as a necklace that was accidentaly lost. I personally believe their were Europeans exploring this land way before MR. Columbus. My imagination goes crazy thinking about crusaders tromping through woods in the US in the 12-1300's.

Thanks Carnage... in the very area where this coin was found, there was an active fur trade in the mid 1600's, so it's actually very likely that it was dropped closer to the date. Apparently all the coins back then were holed and kept together on a string by the owner... Who knows though - anything is possible. Either way it is a crazy find! And yes, the lantern adds quite the Indiana Jones mystique to the night hunt, and whenever I see this coin I will remember that glow in the woods... magical.

A find that probably wouldn't raise too much excitement in Europe but it's definitely not anything common on this side. It's really weird how detecting goes because what's very rare to dig quite often does not mean rare in general and valuable. But bragging rights can even be better than money sometimes.

Exactly right - as a matter of fact these are quite a common dig in the UK... But you probably won't find many earlier coins here in the States so it's really exciting. I don't expect to find anything earlier... I will however, relish the bragging rights among my hunting buddies - however, it is a very hard act to follow... So now we return to our earliest British/American coin competition, at which I am losing quite badly... I have dug the oldest, but among my buds it has an 'outlier' status...

One word - WOW.

I'm from Europe, and I would be very happy finding a coin like yours!

You just beat my personal record for oldest coin with about 120 years.. - well done my friend.

There's a good chance that your coin has a few friends, so hurry back!

Thanks Captain - I think there have been some Spanish coins down in Florida that are older... I'm sure there have been earlier dug, but probably not all that many!

It's a bronze token/coin which I dug out of the ground 3 months ago. I have not been able to identify or date it yet, but hope to succeed some day.

Somebody suggested that it was hindi letters.

Hey Surf - not much actually... pretty common in the UK, and not a precious metal. I have seen them on Ebay for $20 or so, depending on condition...

Here's another interesting factoid on the Jeton I just read online:
'Archeologist Ivor Noel Hume reports 3 Nuremberg jetons were found at the Roanoke Island "Lost Colony" site and William Kelso, Director of the Jamestown Rediscovery I project reports 7 jetons discovered at the Jamestown site, and attributed to Hanns Krauwinckel, obviously brought over by the settlers for gambling purposes. Another Krauwinckel jeton was discoverd in the vicinity of Martin's Hundred, a small plantation on the edge of Jamestown, that was wiped out in a 1622 Indian attack.'
