Default People wanted to see the amethyst silver after cleaning:

Well it took a while, I know someone who makes jewelry, she has the equipment, but this was very hard, as the encrustation went all the way to the amethyst. So the silver part around the amethyst is not very pretty, but here it is anyway:

After:

is the effect of metal pitting? it looks like the area around the gem got it pretty bad... nonetheless must have looked really nice last time.

Right Brain, that is a very nice piece of jewelry that deserves to be worn and enjoyed. I'll bet that minor pitting could be buffed or burnished out, but I think it just gives the ring -- and the stone -- character. Wonderful find. I'd sure be happy with it.

Great job cleaning that puppy up, how much effort was involved?

Thanks guys, a relative of mine makes interesting jewelry and has equipment. She has cleaned many of my rings now. It doesn't take her long, sand, drill buffer, then the wax buffer. But she does this for free so I don't expect her to put in the time to really get between the nook and crannies.

Nook and crannies are extremely hard re sulphur, yes I have tried electrolysis, it only takes me so-far, but maybe I'm not doing it right?

When she cleans silver, it comes up looking amazing. I'll post a before and after.

Pitting like that can be sanded out with a tiny sanding disk on a Dremel. Just takes more time. I have brought back some rings that were in pretty bad shape. I believe a couple that I have found were some that I had made and sold in the past.
