Talking *CLEANED* Didn't even have to dig for this one! Thanks Dollar General!

I didn't get to beep today as I was traveling to TN. After playing tennis with my Gf we went to dollar General for some Coke.

I almost got out exact change but we didn't have any. Just some $1 bills. As the lady reached in the drawer I looked at the quarters praying that a silver one would be passed over to me....I seriously was thinking about this.

The lady hands the change to me, but hesitates....Before I know it she's eyeballing a black quarter. I stuck my paw out in case she knew what it COULD be...She handed it over slightly reluctantly.

Like a kid before Christmas I couldn't stand it not knownig what was in my hand. I rushed to the car and before I opened my hand to reveal what I thought was there I shook the change in my hand....

"JINGLE JINGLE" I looked at my gf and said, "Only silver makes that sound"

Here's what it was making that beautiful noise.

I did the happy dance in the car when I saw 1964 and a D on the back.

My question is this...Is that black junk toning? It looks slick almost like paint - I don't want to clean it just yet in case the toning makes it worth more. What are your opinions??

Cleaned it up! It has a red tone because I took the pic with my cell phone and the flash made it look weird. It's a really nice shiny quarter now. Well, almost.

Happened at work with me a while ago. Customer thought it was something special, but had to give it to me, as it was the only money he had. Also a 64 Washington. I quickly swapped it with a clad quarter I had.

Nice pick-up. I don't believe that the black toning would bring any premium over melt. My vote is to give it a nice baking soda and water paste bath. Don't think you can hurt the value at all on that one.

Sweet Bonesquat! I've been checking every bit of change I get. Got a 1964 Rosie last week.

Man -- don't even have to metal detect! You amaze me. Cool Beans! Maybe we can detect tomorrow sometime. Have plans today that doesn't include detecting!

Default silver

thats funny because i always listen to change when i get it and you can totally hear when you get something different. It started with me as a kid when at a local grocery store i heard something funny in my change checked it immediately and it was a two headed quarter. that was twenty years ago and i have found like five silver coins just by listening to my change

Nice work bonesquart. I did the same thing kinda. I was at the 7-11 and when the clerk open the draw i saw some wheeties in there but she closed the draw. So I brought some gum and when she opened it I exchanged pennies for pennies. Got 6 wheeties.. Congrats. on the silver It pays to be observant...

Back in the day, early 60,s there abouts. Ladies who frequented bars often painted their quarters with fingernail polish and put them back in circulation. This was at least a popular fad in the midwest. Good chance you got one of them, BS.................................

It's always nice when that happens. If you plan on collecting it, then clean it, but it's unfortunately only worth the melt value, which is currently just slightly over $5 (and not likely to change very much over the next few years).

I've got "junk silver" sack full of 'em that I never bothered to clean. I'll sell the bag if prices ever spike.

But you did just give me a damn great idea. Most people that have old coins laying around that they may think are collectible obviously don't spend them unless they're hard-up. Well, a person low on cash is a lot more likely to spend their money at places like dollar stores, old rural gas stations, and (sadly) liquor stores (of course, even people that have no financial worries still go to all these places - I'm just being somewhat general). I'm going to have to hit up the dollar stores around me and see if they'll sell me a few rolls of quarters.

Good idea...but don't bother with the rolled quarters...they're nothing special from those stores...they don't roll them themselves...

but, ask if you can buy a few dollars worth from them...as long as they're not pre-rolled.
