Bottle caps look like coins to detectors you just need experience probably,or a different place to hunt.

Default ace 350 with bottle caps

Well it seems my new 3 day old detector does the same thing...I have writen Garrett about this problem tonight so waiting on a reason...
I dug 15 bottle caps in one evening without getting ONE quarter..which is where is show up on my 350....I want to know this ...does the detector go by the only the size of the object to show it....I would not hope so..it should also check the material (metal no silver) and reject it...and put it in the iron zone on the display...am I wrong here...it has no silver in it...so what gives when it says its a 25/10 cent piece ....

ALL Garretts do. My AT pro read bottle caps as coins.

Its the metal in the bottle cap,and ifits within 5 inches of the surface it rings like a coin.I am running a 350,not impressed.

Not sure why.
This is the way most detectors work, especially ones with a DD coil.
This is why we learn different skills and try to get better at this stuff.
Now if you want to go high end, some detectors might have a few more tools to give you more info like that polar plot screen on a V3i, but considering the price of the 350 vs. that range, the 350 is doing exactly what it is designed to do.

Again, Garrett is going to tell you your detector is working fine, and the REASON bottle caps sound so good and like quarters is because there is a trade off when using that DD coil.
The round concentric coils do not have a long scanning field like a DD, and a DD works a little better in mineralization, but you also get a few levels less in discrimination, too.

I have a Vaquero with a concentric and I learned what most bottle caps sound like and the high end problem ones disc out...usually, and don't exactly sound like coins.

If I put on my DD coil, those same problem types sound mostly like nice quarters to me.
When I first started in this hobby, everything that seemed to sound the same...if I put on my DD coil, those same problem types sound mostly like nice quarters to me...again!
We learn to deal with this stuff by reading and listening to the type of advice in this thread.

This is a picture of my first hunt with the DD coil at an extremely trashy park.
The object at this park is remove the top layer of trash to see what was masked below so I meant to dig all this, and I can tell you every one of those bottle caps sounded just like a quarter.
I have gotten a little better at telling the difference since then, but when I use my DD, I still end up digging them.

I am pretty good but not perfect, and no machine on the market is infallible...but we can continue to learn as we grow in this hobby, and that is also a tried and true fact.

I've found out that I could avoid digging most bottle caps if I wanted to while using the AT-Pro(or it could just be luck) I got my At-Pro about 3 weeks ago and my local dealer told me that if I had iron audio on that most bottle caps would have a slight low grunt at the end of the high beep.

I first had an ACE250 and it loved the caps as well so I was a little skeptical of this. I told myself I'd give it a month of listening for this grunt and digging everything regardless. Thus far I was able to predict 19 bottle caps and would have missed zero coins while only digging 2 bottle caps that did not have this grunt. It might just be something that works in our area of PA, but whatever it is, it seems to be working for me.

I have a ace250 w a 8x5 dd coil dug a bunch of bottle caps to yesterday then switched back to my stock and dug 2 silvers 1 buff 3 Indians and this was the same area I just hunted with my dd so different areas with the different coils makes for a different response even one that went over with a etrac missed the coins in between a bunch of nails go figure!

When I had my Ace 250, with the concentric coil it would ring up TONS of stuff as coins. Bottlecaps, weird metals, other junk etc would all ring up on that bell tone. I attribute it to the quality of the Ace and the fairly low levels of discrmination. I have an AT Pro now and haven't dug many bottlecaps, yet I'm not even using iron audio or pro mode.......but definetely the AT Pro will disc out those pesky bottlecaps, or at least the majority of them.
