Check out the whites mxt pro. If you plan on gold nugget detecting you are going to want something that is designed for that. The AT Gold would be better than the pro for that purpose.

Yeah that seems really good a little pricy but thats ok. Will the mxt penetrate clay? because there is alot of clay in the ground where i want to go.

Default Welcome from White Plains, New York

There are some very good machines for under $300.00 - Whites, Tesoro, Fisher, Garrett. I would start with an entry-level machine (unless you are rolling in dough). You'll also need a GOOD digging tool like a Lesche digger ($45). Look at the Garrett Ace 250; Tesoro Compadre; Fisher F2; Whites Coinmaster.

There is no gold in New York, except small flake gold pushed here from Canada by glaciers, so get a machine for coins and jewelry. Cheers and Good Luck!

Well, When I buy I like to buy the good stuff cause you buy cheap you buy twice. Also the reason I want one to look for gold is two reasons jewelry and if I ever wanted to go somewhere they do I don't have to buy another.
I mostly be looking for relics. Would the mxt pro be good for a general purpose ??

The MXT is an excellent general purpose detector. I've seen some great deals on used ones this past week as well.

The Pro is a good machine. If you want a great gold machine as well look at the Garrett AT Gold http://bigboyshobbies.net/shop/garrett-at-gold/. It had a great DD coil and will hit nuggets as well as coins and waterproof.

Holler if you have questions.

That's why I would buy the AT Pro and avoid the F2. MHO.
Good luck with your choice. HH.

The AT Gold is better on relics and gold due to the frequency. AT Pro better on coins due to freq. both waterproof.

MXT coil is waterproof but machine is not so don't splash it or drop it.

Holler at me with questions or a great deal! Love to help you!

Not in the way that the MXT has a relic mode. You do have the ability to set a custom program which would accept more iron signals, or you could open the coin program allowing less discrimination.

If you are going to use any coil in the water be certain to use silicone grease on the connections. And on the White's - keep the box dry.

The three best options in your price range are the AT pro or the F2 with the DD coil (299)or the F4 (399)(comes stock with DD coil)and ground balance.

If you go to big boy hobbies site most MD's come with good digging tools or some package to save $$$

I have the f2 and f4 and have had great success with both. The f4 and f2 both find jewelry. It is hard to beat the f4 for 399 or less. I have found things at 9-10 inches down. The pinpoint is so accurate that when I coin shoot I find have my coins by scoring (slit)the ground not digging a hole.

No matter what machine you buy right now you will upgrade later so if you don't have a thousand bucks to spend on the very best look for the best MD in the middle range and compare prices.

Check out Garretts website. They will explain the differences between the Pro and the Gold. I believe the biggest difference is the frquency, however, there are a few other differences. I would recommend the 5X8 coil if you hunt trashy areas. I think the Pro is coming with the 5x8 as a package deal right now. I really love mine.

Forgot to mention, the Gold is designed for freshwater use only. Just in case you are considering any beach hunting.
