Default 55 minute hunt, 7 cents, semi key wheat

ughhhhhh, I got permission for an abandoned 1901 farm, took off work early today because weather.com showed no rain till 8pm tonite. I get to the farm by 2pm and by 2:55pm it was raining.......so aggravating!!!!

anyhow, at least I can go back again whenever this rain stops. I hit a small hot spot and got 6 wheats and one indian under a large tree. Now you know me, I RARELY even clean wheats, in fact I just check the dates and toss em in a jar. But these all looked so good, so clean, I actually took time to clean them up with peroxide and take a pic. It is odd out of 6 wheats, 3 of them were 1910, 2 of them 1911 and one was a 1912-D, actually a semi key wheat....lol. There should be some more indians or a barber dime hiding somewhere at this farm, just got to get back there.

here's the pic, a real rare pic for me with nice clean wheats!!!! hahahaha

I can never get my wheats that clean in a hot peroxide bath. What else do you do to them Terry?

When I rarely use peroxide, I leave em in there until the bubbling stops, 15 min or so....then i rinse them under water and hit em with a toothbrush to get rid of the junk the peroxide ate off, dry them off, apply a bit of wax, rub it in between my fingers, use a soft cloth to buff off the excess, then ready for pictures.....lots of steps, and that is why I dont waste time cleaning wheats

Goes4ever: Well, I for one sure like the way your coins look after that peroxide treatment. What do the numismatists say about the peroxide treatment and collector value?

As a collector of wheats for over 30 years I have found that the peroxide treatment does no harm to the wheats. It doesn't remove the patina at all, the patina "that aged brown color" is what collectors look for. If it is scratched or buffed or chemically removed to make the coin look more coppery then the value drops dramatically. What Goes4ever has done here actually has restored the coins to a more natural and collectable state than dirty dug coins, and he is able to do it without removing the patina.
Nice coins and surprisingly well preserved for being so old. Congrats Goes4ever!

Nice finds and thank you for the information! I see it referred to as a hot peroxide bath. How do you heat the peroxide? Microwave, stove, or what?

Do you just put it in a small cup or bowl? I've never done this so I'm learning.

Thanks!

Great looking pennies! Congrats. Gotta be some more good stuff there.

Most of the wheats I find are'40s & 50's, and the Indians, well no sense beating that dead horse.

Keith

thank you for answering that MUCH better than I could have! I for one would much rather buy a coin like the ones I cleaned today than the way they came out of the ground!

as for the peroxide, I put about an inch in a small bowl, put it in the microwave for 2 minutes, (normally boiling by then) drop the wheats in, let them sit till they stop fizzing, remove and brush them under running water with a toothbrush, to remove the gunk the peroxide softened up, dry them with a soft cloth
