Default Cannon ball!!!

me and my friend had gotten permission to hunt a house close to a battlefield (location classified at owners request). we had went a total of 3 days finding numerous civil war bullets and old coins. i told my self that there had to be something more. a buckle, button, shoulder plate. ect. well we returned again with my friend (a beginner) had kept joking about finding a connon ball. i simply laughed and said maybe one day. well sure enough that day was today. i had told myself to hit the large embankment along the historic river. it paid off! i replelled down using rope wrapped along a tree and got a strong signal showing 1 cent 10 cent, flashing quater. i pinpointed. 2 inches down i yelled to my friend at the top. he then repelled down beside me and started digging. the dirt was rolling down the step hill. i was shaking my head and thought well its probably gone now. after 6 in. deep it was still in the hole. these are infamous signals of cans. i told my friend to give up. i climbed to the top and started detecting on flat ground. my determined friend stayed and dug. im gald he did! about 5 mins later i hear my friend call my name as he struggled over the top of the embankment....holding a 50 pound dahlger!!! my lucky begginer friend had struck a lifetime find!

You do know you have a live cannon ball there?? I see the fuse. It could still go off so I would get it to a safe place and make some phone calls. I may be wrong but I don't think so. You may be able to have it made safe but I think the bomb squad will just blow it up. The fuse has been depressed but it probably hit soft dirt and did not go all the way in. Seriously, you have an emergency on your hands there.

Good to hear, and that's what I was going to say too until I read more. You don't want to be the latest casualty of the Civil War.

Nice find! Our detecting group has found 2 in the past couple of months they are solid shot though and rather small compared to yours! HH

That is really cool. My uncle found one years ago on his property on Johns Is. It was still live and he had to get Charleston County to disarm it for him.

The persistense of your friend payd off big time.

The reciever of that canon ball should be nervous, explosives or not. - hard to imagine the canon used to fire it, but it must be big.

Could it be a canonball from a mortar? (pardon my english - supposed to be a small fat canon with a large diameter used to destroy fortresses in the old times)

Ultra nice find! - would love to see your faces when you unearthed it!

hehe - the canon ball makes your shovel look like a garden trovel

It is a Naval Dahlgren round fired from the river ,that hit the bluff face we were searching, I was told several things on what it was ,until I got it to the Expert and he identified it on the spot, Harry Ridgeway is the most knowledgeable person I have ever met on Civil War Artillery, his website is www.relicman.com cool site.
