Default Youtube and TV can set unrealistic expectations (new post)

Thoughts about the unrealistic expectations that you get if only exposed to detecting via youtube or TV shows about the hobby.

Most Youtube / TV detecting shows don't show the work involved

You brought up some really good points and observations. Thanks for mentioning me also, I am honored to be included in the same sentence as those other guys (who always find better stuff than me!). I actually have people who watch my videos and then write me accusing me of faking the finds because they don't make the same kinds of finds!

I imagine those shows you mentioned will utlimately be accused of planting items because all those folks who run out and buy detectors won't be willing to put in the effort, time, and research that we do and they will lose interest in the hobby fairly quickly.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. Best wishes and HH, Dave.

I think it's the new "get rich quick" scheme. Kind of like storage wars and American pickers. Although both of these shows do air segments of being "skunked" it portrays an image of finding treasures in every old house or storage unit.

I think we have a great hobby and due to multiple reasons it has been banned in some places and on the verge of being banned in many others. I hope these shows don't bring out the careless and reckless people that are more than willing to destroy our code of ethics in search of treasures they'll likely never find.

Oh heck who knows, maybe if we had 10 times the number of people in the hobby it would help preserve access.
It's a lot harder to say no to many than a few especially if they are paying a national organization to protect their rights. Which hasn't really happened yet.

Default Coinshooter Jargon List Updated

I updated my coinshooting jargon page today.

Thanks for those who emailed me ideas. Most of the ones I received were not used often enough to go on the list. My list is commonly used phrases only.

Also, I don't have beach hunting terms on my list.

Default Quickbelt Video

I use this for detecting and love it. I've used it for 15 or so hunts now. I have a couple of pouches and such on mine, depending on the weather, distance from the car I'll be, or whether I'm carrying my video camera.

Exclamation Pocketspill Blog subscription setup improved

Hi all, I have revised my subscription system to use Feedburner so you can now subscribe via email if you'd rather. Of course the RSS option is there too.

The blog is also faster now. Much faster.

Thanks to those who emailed me asking for this. I'm up to several hundred subscribers and appreciate every one!

Default Pocketspill.com is now Detecting.us

Hey diggers. My detecting site was renamed to "detecting.us" yesterday. Since I'm moving towards some charity-oriented goals, "pocketspill.com" had a "greedy" flavor to non-detectorists I had never anticipated. Plus Google, Bing, Facebook and others are treating ".us" domains more equitably these days. Anyway, the old links will work for a while longer. HH.

Well, it's based on Wordpress - and those sites tend to have a similar look and feel. I wasn't copy-catting... promise!

Default Hunt photostream on Instagram live.

I've set up my instagram - which is a social-enabled gallery. I'll be using it for all field hunt photography from here on, and importing photos into my blog posts.
