Default 1777 Spanish Half Reale

I stopped for an hour after work to hunt a baseball field and was pleasantly surprised when I pulled up this 1777 Spanish half reale right in the town I live. Although it's very worn, I can clearly make out 77 right after the hole. This is the oldest silver coin I've ever found.

I got a steady 11-38 in all directions around the coin at 8 inches. I thought it was going to be a wheat penny because sometimes they come in at that number. This is another reason not to skip wheat penny signals. Last Friday I dug a 2 cent coin that came in as a wheat penny.

In this condition should I use electrolysis to remove the black tarnish and see if there is more detail under it?

Thought I had another silver with this one. It was 8 inches deep and coming it at a steady 11-45.

Wow! Even though its worn, it is still an impressive find. Glad you dug the wheat penny signal. Congrats!

I think you are the only person who could possibly find a Reale at a baseball field...Nice one Dave.

Default Electrolysis

After electrolysis

It looks to me like the last number is worn away so this is a 177? half reale.

I can't explain it. I'm doing what I've always done (detecting often). I guess the metal detecting gods have been smiling on me the past couple of months.

Yes, the second one this year/month. The other one was an 1813 half reale and it rang up at 12-40 (only an inch deep). The really worn one I found last year hunting with you was about the size of a nickel and came in at a 12-40 or 12-41. If it's deep and sounds good I'm digging it regardless of the number.

@ sean - I think John has dug a reale in a baseball field. I seem to remember him posting something about that.
