Any woods near a school , river/stream , old building of any sort , dam , store , park or playground , are good locations. And using old maps and photos can be a good help. Many good locations in the woods are made by accident just by picking a random location and giving it a shot , there are a lot of days like that being skunked , but you just never know what you will find. You may think it looks like nobody has been there and it cant be a good location , but every section of woods has looked very different in years past , there could have been something interesting on that site a hundred years ago and there have been many people pass through there over all those years. Best thing is it looks like an unlikely spot and has probably been passed over by other detectorists.

If you're hunting the woods it should have a logging history try to find some records on where the logging camps existed. Take note if the camp had a fire on the records. When looking for the buildings where these fires happened you'll probably run into a place that has a ton of nails but you find some interesting things as well. (if you don't mind pulling out the nails)!! Most of the buildings in these camps were temporary and the buildings were moved from camp to camp so you can't rely on finding any sign a camp was there all you can do is use your trusty md...good luck!
