Default How to fix? E-track nulling on large portion of old lawn

I received permission to hunt an old lawn yesterday from the 1920s. My E-trac pulled some silver and tokens on one half of the lawn... the other half was one big "NULL"... threshold vanished, and with it all signals except memorials.

Going into all metal, I do not get lots of iron. I have tried running on Auto, Auto +2, Auto +3, and manual with ranges between 15 and 30. Nothing gets rid of the Null.

How do you deal with a huge null area on the e-Trac?

Default Hunt in

Hunt in TTF. The good targets will sound good and the bad will have a lower sound. Dig the tones that are not grunting . Takes a while to get used to , but it will work great in that situation.

Yeah other than trying TTF and going really slow I'm not sure what you can do. Perhaps there is just one giant metal plate under one side of the lawn? But seriously, I have been on parts of beaches that were so bad it was almost one constant null. When that I happens I just move somewhere else or (if I'm feeling patient and think it might actually be a good spot) I'll pull out the little Sharpshooter coil and go REAL slow.

Ah, the terrible null. This means loads of iron or mineralization is present. Unfortunatly your Etrac will fall flat on its face in this situation. TTF is your best bet, If you got money buy another machine for these conditions. As good as Etracs are in trash which they rule supreme, heavy iron or mineralization completly cripples them.

I hunted a 1910 house with an Etrac and had a VERY hard time finding any decent signal. Threshold hum was all but gone, and the only targets the machine picked up were in the 1-3 inch range. Only coins were Memorials cents. Decided to give the F2 a try over the excact same patch of lawn. I got a 1941 and 1919 Wheat cent for coins. I went over this area in both TTF and conductive tones. My $1500 machine was bested by the quick swing of a $200 Fisher.

I don't care what anyone says, Etracs will best any machine in trashy areas as well as clean areas, but those sights where you can't even get a treshold because of iron or mineralization, the Etrac will get owned by machines costing much much less. It literally is almost useless in these conditions.

This is a HUGE reason why I am looking for a secondary machine to fill the void the Etrac leaves in these cases.

The same thing happens with the Sovereign. There are some places where the threshold disappears for long periods of time. The AT Pro hunted right in the thick of it. Detectors are tools. Sometimes you need a pliers instead of a wrench.

TTF is your only option, in high iron areas the etrac will kick BUTT over other machines if the user knows what he is doing. I have no idea why jressman would say what he did, but a inexpensive detector cant hold a candle to the etrac in high iron. Learn TTF and you will be amazed what other cheap detectors missed because of the iron. Go to my site in my sig and look at the section on how to set up and properly use TTF and you will NEVER fear the null again. The etrac is the best weapon you can own for high iron, just ask any experienced etrac user who KNOWS how to use TTF.

That tutorial is great! I had tried random versions of what you suggested but forgot to change the audio to Ferrous from Conductive.

Last day of vacation so will be testing this this afternoon on the 1910s location.

As Goes says TTF is good but the main thing in my opinion is REALLY REALLY REALLY slow down. The Minelab E-Trac Metal Detector can hear goodies in a dead null if you are going slow. Its one awesome machine!

another thing to remember is you will lose threshold when you pass the coil over ANY target that is rejected,,,,, not just iron. So with "trash high" on the accepted target will get a response over the rejected one,,, go slow, has that been said yet? LOL,,, next time you have a null try throwing a coin on the ground and see what you hear. A surface coin is not the best thing as far as getting a normal response front he ET but you might be surprised at what you find out

I'll totally agree on the high mineralization, it will virtually shut the FBS and BBS machines down. That is when you HAVE to go so slow like you are not even moving really. If an accepted target is under the coil it will sound off even in a nulled out area. Iron is no problem at all for these machines. I've went behind a few Fisher Prices and found stuff they didn't even see. Here's how slow I run my ETrac in ungodly trashy places nulled out places......

Two Tone Frequency.
Jack that is a good video. I have those spots as well where the null out is constant, in my case I know it is iron. So how do you like the Sunray X8? I am Debating between the X5 or the X8 for my nulled out areas. Im actually thinking I will need both but am trying to decide which one to get first.
As far as to the OP as everyone said swinging much slower in those situation. Sometimes I think Im practicing TaiChi in some places, but I have found clads and pennies in those areas. But I dont like TTF myself. Also if you watch Jacks video going back and forth in the masked screen to unmasked to confirm alot and lifting the coil to get your reading to stabilize. I do that alot as well because when there are too many targets around a good one the numbers wont change fast enough, just wiggle over the good signal then lift and the numbers will change.
