I'm sure I have one of these buttons somewhere.
I believe they call this a "foul anchor", where a rope is wrapped aound the anchor. It's a fairly standard design, which has been around in one form or another, (as Simon says) since around 1774. __________________ |

Yep, it's a fouled anchor, and the crown is a giveaway item - if it's British.
They added the crown in 1812 to distinguish the Royal Navy from the merchies who had just started using the same anchor. See, ain't researching useful?

I do not know if anyone has noticed but the fouled anchor is bordered by an acanthus leaf on each side which is very similiar to the napoleonic 15 th infantry button which has also acanthus leaves on it too Is this really a british butoon??
