Default [PICTURES] Minelab Safari/Explorer/Quattro/ETrac creaky cuff?

My Safari started to develop a creak on the cuff. It was bugging me so much that I had to do something about it. The problem with the cuff is that it's secured with a single screw to the chassis. This allows enough flex to rub the chassis and make a creaking noise when swinging.

There is another creak that I need to address, a chassis creak, but I'll save that for another thread. Anyway, here's my fix for the cuff creak!

Tools needed: Scissors, old bike innertube (I used a 26x1.9), permanent marker, screwdriver, tape

Mark your current cuff position with the tape

Remove your cuff. You can see where it's rubbing against the the chassis.

Cuff a section of innertube so it extends past the cuff base

Split the tube on one side and make a hole for the screw

Tighten the cuff back onto the detector and trace around the base with the marker

Remove the cuff again and remove the tube

Be taken back to elementary school as you cut along the line.

Place your trimmed tube back onto the cuff and screw it back on.

Enjoy a squeak free life

That is ingenious! I am just getting ready to order a Safari and as luck would have it I just replaced the tubes in my sons bike and still have the old ones laying around. I will definitely have to incorporate this fix.

Thanks for sharing.

My Safari hasn't developed a creak yet but I think I'll go ahead with this fix before it starts. Good thinking, good fix, thanks.
Daug.

I had not yet fixed my Safari and yesterday I noticed the screw had loosened just a tad and the cuff was slipping just a little leaving ugly scratch marks on my machine handle; this morning I took Ark's suggestion and fixed it. It's a real easy fix and will serve a couple of purposes. Thanks again for the suggestion.
