Default Finds on Day 2

I posted a couple days back on my first outing ever with a detector and was fairly discouraged. I have a Whites Prizm 6T and after practice can say I was really pleased with an hour out tonight.

It really takes some time, but am not getting used to knowing the sounds of the beeps and getting much better with the pin pointing. In a earlier post, I was given the great advice of a local place here in Des Moines that stocked a basic hand pin pointing wand and I can't tell you what a difference it made! After digging the hole, I used wand and found my find in seconds rather than minutes and still not knowing if it was in my pan or still in the hole.

Any other new people to detecting- That is my huge tip. What was a very frustrating first time out turned into a very enjoyable hour my 2nd time out.

In 1 hour, I dug 4 dimes, a nickle, 2 pennies, a car key and a old mens ring (Unfortunately not gold, but still neat all the same)

Now I just need to do some research and find some old sites and get permission to search on them. What do you find the best way to go about it? Talking with local people or doing research through old newspapers?

Yep... pinpointers are a big help.... Nice finds. The methods you suggest are certainly proper, research, talking to people etc... then knocking on doors. It works. HH RickO

Practice the detuning and/or invest in a pro pointer. I've been working on the detuning myself because I really don't want to purchase yet another item to dangle off the fanny pack I purchased. In my eyes, I'm viewing a pro pointer as another sort of "mini-detector" and after spending a few hundred dollars in gear... the last thing I want to do is purchase one more thing.

Thankfully, the Cibola I have is pretty great at pinpointing items... but in lieu of that, I'm practicing the x-ing and detuning when I get a signal.

Do a search on detuning. It might help what you're having issues with...
