Received My 100lb Retrieving Magnet

Received (2) 100lb Retrieving Magnets today. 1 for me and 1 for creepycrawler ( my hunting buddy ) Since he recently lost his magnet. I can't wait to use it and find out what kind of stuff we can find using it. I have never done this but have read and saw some good things people have found doing it. They are weight about 2lbs but say they can hold up to 100lbs. I will have to test it out. Also what would be the best rope to use? Well wish us luck.

Any decent quality polypro rope will work. Just keep in mind how heavy an item is when trying to pull it straight up.

Yeah My buddy just lost his because the rope broke or something. I want to make sure whatever I use isn't gonna break! I don't want to loose my magnet.

I'd use something like the rope in this link:

Look up how to braid rope, and you can braid it around the hook and have a very strong connection.

Use a couple feet of chain before the rope. This will help eliminate a lot of rope abrasion while dragging bottom. Although cant help but think everything will be of the junk category due to rust issues.

i got the 250 pound magnet from harbor frieght and a 600 pound pull robe 100 feet from the same place.. use bolts and a u clamp with the rope and tied knots every 2 or so feet the length of the rope so it would be easier to pull in.. still waiting for the snow and ice to melt

I have some polypro rope, about 50 feet of it. Actually the rope didn't break, the spring hook that came with the rope caught on something underwater and the object actually pulled the spring open and released the magnet. I think it's better just to braid the rope around the magnet's eyehook or whatever it came with.


Great suggestions all around. Also, gloves or a very keen eye are a necessity because fish hooks will be sticking from the magnet all over.

The quarter size rare earth magnets secured to an aluminum bar work well as a drag. slits in the aluminum and JB Weld work ok,troling along docks will net tools and old foot cutting cans. the 200lb magnet must be a monster but wont get motors . amazing how many bobbi pins are lost in the water. If you want a method that is a LOT easier than braiding the rope thorugh the eye, just use a follow-through figure 8 knot. It's one of the strongest knots, it's simple, and it won't bind it's self to the point that you can't un-tie it.
