Good evening everyone.
Ive recently started thinking it would be great fun to start detecting. I even have several places already planned, starting with a 1 room schoolhouse in the middle of a field near my dads. An old family friend farms about 40 thousand acres around the area. Im sure he could point me to some old homestead sites. Also the property my mom now lives on use to be a farm in the early 1900s. As far as I know its never had a detector on it. Ive spent the last few days researching as much as I can. So far Ive been able to learn quite a bit. One thing I haven't been able to find out is what the difference is between coils. I see people suggesting to others that they get different types for better results. I haven't seen anyone explain what a 4x6dd is or why its better or worse than a 5 inch for example. I know its been asked thousands of times but Im looking for advice on buying a detector. Many people suggest the 250 for entry level but I want to make sure I get something that will last me a long time. People keep saying how much their finds went up when they upgraded and I don't have the option of having much spare money to upgrade shortly after starting. I don't like the thought of starting and knowing that if I had spent a bit more I may have better luck. A learning curve doesn't bother me much, I understand that it can take a while to figure things out. Currently I have $600 that I can put towards a unit and can probably get together another 300 or so before the ground thaws up here. What difference would there be between a $220 Ace 250 compared to something like a Whites M6 or MXT 300 (high end of my price range). Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. Nate |

Hi. welcome to the forums.
You might want to set some loot aside for a pin-pointer. They're really a help, especially if you plan on digging in something other than sand. Greetings from Rhode Island Mark |

theres a lot of MDs for $900 out there, keep looking and read all the reviews. hunting land like that you need something that goes deep to find those caches.

I started detecting in the mid 80's in central SoDak and found a lot of neat things around homestead sites. From my experience, I wouldn't expect to find a gold cache since most homesteaders weren't the type to have that or go dropping their spare change (if they had any). Still, you'll dig up a lot of history.
Regarding what MD to buy, I'd recommend doing the research obviously and buy the absolute best you can afford and put the time in to learn how to use it -- assuming you're serious about the whole hobby. My parents bought me a Whites 6000Di when I was about 15 (sadly it's now dead). It was probably too much for me at the time, but I HAD to do the homework to make it work for me and prove to my parents they hadn't made a mistake! I think if you're serious, you'll do the homework to make any machine work for you and be happy with the results. |

![]() Im currently looking at some old maps on Historic Map Works and have so far found 7 sites on a 1903 map that Im 90% certain I can get permission to hunt. Theyre just outside of town in the area I grew up. I also have a lot of parks, schools and bike trails I can hunt here in town. |
