Default Newbie in OH

Hi all. My name is Clayton and one of my buddies at work told me about his metal detecting excursions the other day and brought in a bunch of awesome stuff that he's found from Civil War bullets to Diamond Rings. This got me interested in the hobbie and researching metal detecting in general. I don't have a detector yet but I am taking suggestions. I'm only in OH for the summer then it's back to school in FL for me. Any suggestions on what type of metal detector would be best for a beginner trying to find coins and jewelery? Thanks =]

Welcome aboard from a former Buckye living in California.

I suggest an Ace 250 or a Fisher F2...both around $200.

I'll probably be doing most of my detecting in parks in Tallahassee or out on the beach anywhere between Tally and Ft. Lauderdale. Probably won't spend too much time anywhere else.

Thanks for your help everyone =]

Welcome aboard Clayton. A lot depends on what type of terrain you will be detecting and what you hope to find. If detecting beaches (and in FL that would be best) for coins and jewelry, be sure to get an MD that will work in wet sand as well as dry. RickO

Many of the more experienced detectorist here have begun their response to you by asking questions. I'm going to take the discussion a step further and plainly tell you, based upon research & years in the field, that their isn't a single machine, on the market today, that can compare to the 'New' Minelab X-Terra's. Regardless of the area your hunting or the ground your hunting, nothing and I do mean nothing can compare the the Minelab X-Terra 305 and the X-Terra 505, for the beginning detectorist. When you understand the technology behind these incredible machines, you'll then understand why I've chosen these as the best machines on the market today for the beginner.
