Default I think I may have stumbled on...

When I was at my sister's house, I was showing her how my detector worked and dug up a very strange looking thing. I will post a pic later. It looked and felt like a piece of coral with some whitish material showing. At first I thought it was quartz, but then saw a strange looking metal object in it and figured that was what my detector picked up on. The strange, one inch object, looks like a very miniature soup latel. There was very dark soil where I was digging and suggested to me that it might have been something else a long time ago. My question: What do old shells look like and what does old burial ground soil look like? I will be going back there soon and would like to be prepared. I did pull up a TOPO and found nothing. It is a very heavy woodsy place, so I won't rely solely on the TOPO. Any help would be appreciated

Maybe its a meteor rite of some sort....You asked: what does old burial ground soil look like? I would think like regular everyday soil..

If you think it is some kind of burial ground, I would leave that alone. If if is private property you don't have to worry about antiquities laws too much, but just the thought of disturbing a burial site is too much for me.
