Question Recommendation for Kid: Ace 250 v Prizm III

Hi all,

Just looking for some experience/advice on making a metal detector purchase for my 10 year old son. He is new to metal detecting. After reading a bunch, I think I'm choosing between the Garrett Ace 250 and the White's Prizm III. We live in northern New York, which can vary from heavy sod to sandy, but all are rocky! I want it to be easy for him to learn/pick up, but not get him frustrated by not pinpointing well enough or gettng too many false readings.

Experiences and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Hi & welcome to the forum, I am from northern New York also (not far from Ogdensburg). Either of the two detectors you mentioned would make a good one - you might want to consider the Fisher F2 and the Tesoro Silver uMax also. Tell your son after he gets his detector not to dig up all the goodies up here, he has to save some for me . Steve.

You can check out Tony's website here http://tcmetaldetectors.com/ and have a look at many detectors, Tony is a sponsor on this forum & a great fella to do business with.

Thank SkiWhiz. I'll also take a look at the ones you've mentioned. Although I live near Albany, we also have a family place in Chippewa Bay, so if my son takes to this, maybe we'll run into you!

I bought my son CAVScout (who is now a member in this forum and stationed in Ft. Drum) a Fisher detector for his first good detector and he has sharpened his skills that he can now out hunt me. He has upgraded since but that detector is still great. Good Luck with your choice.

Regards, Sean

Personally, I found the Ace 250 kind of complicated to use and pin point with. I have a Whites XLT and I love it. ( a little to expensive for a kid) I would choose the whites because they are easy to use.
